Gps Vs. Immobilizers

GPS vs. Immobilizers

Ontario Security Solutions

Vehicle theft is on the rise. Some areas of North America are worse than others. Some vehicles have a higher theft rate than others. What about heavy trucks or heavy construction equipment. A trucker’s worst nightmare is having his load stolen. According to the Ontario Trucking Association, Canada’s Trucking industry loses more than one billion per year. What’s worse, trucking companies can have exorbitant insurance premiums with high deductibles. In cases where there has been excessive theft, a company has to self insure because no insurance company wants their business. Thieves aren’t dumb. They like trucks that have a heavy duty padlock on the back door. It has to be valuable with a big lock on it.

Trucking companies try to block in trailers sitting in the yard to discourage the potential of theft. Construction companies cross their fingers every day when they come to the job site, hoping that their equipment didn’t get stolen the night before. Most people don’t know that some equipment have a standard key. Many people prefer to hide and hope it doesn’t happen to them. Some try to be proactive and do something about it. Some have turned to GPS systems. A noble attempt. Unfortunately, this technology is reactive. It means that it only works for you after the equipment has been stolen. If it’s not too far away, the police can help you. If it has traveled a distance, it becomes more troublesome to recover. Law enforcement officials are already taxed dealing with the greater needs of society. They really don’t have the resources to deal with theft. That is why sometimes a vehicle with an installed GPS does not get recovered. Of course, even if your vehicle did get retrieved, sometimes you don’t want it back because it has been abused to the point of non use.

Well there is an answer.

Introducing the new technology. Well really it’s existing technology. However here in North America most people have no idea that it exists. Not only does it exist, it is proven, and available. I am talking about the Vehicle immoblizers. They are also called anti-theft systems. OEM vehicle immobilizers isolate one circuit, namely the ignition. Best in class approved immobilizers isolate three circuits. Auto Watch carries the premier anti theft immobilizers on the market today. They isolate three electrical systems on a vehicle. They are designed to immobilize any vehicle on and off road. If it has a motor, it can be immobilized. The products are ULC approved and TS16949 certified. Some of their products have been tested and approved by the Department of Homeland Security in the U.S. Auto Watch’s claim to fame is that they have had ZERO thefts in over 9.5 million installations worldwide. North America is behind the times. This company is successful around the world and virtually unheard of in North America. Vehicle immobilizers are pro -active, compared to their reactive GPS cousins. Immobilizers are designed to allow only authorized personnel to start a vehicle, thus effectively preventing theft. Now there is a vehicle theft solution.

Entrepreneur’s RFID chip implant to open doors, start car

Entrepreneur’s RFID chip implant to open doors, start car

Thursday, March 24, 2005

A technology entrepreneur in northeastern Washington asked a doctor to implant an RFID chip into his hand in order to experiment with the technology. Amal Graafstra, who runs a technology company in Bellingham, WA, asked a doctor to place the chip under the skin of his left hand, and posted pictures of the procedure to the photo-sharing site, Flickr. Graafstra plans to use the chip for keyless entry to his car, home, or as a login for computer systems.

Implanting RFID chips is a relatively old technology. Professor Kevin Warwick of the University of Reading, UK implanted a 23mm RFID chip into his left arm in August 1998. It allowed him to open doors and turn on the lights in a room as he entered. Further European research in the area was recently dealt a blow when the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies made a presentation to the European Union raising privacy concerns over the potential for such chips to be used to track members of the public.

In mid-2004, about 160 Mexican officials received RFID implants for security purposes, and scientists in the past have implanted themselves with such chips for research purposes. In October 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the implantation of Verichip technology for medical purposes.

An implantable RFID chip is a minuscule capsule containing a microchip and an antenna, all enclosed in glass. The chip that Mr. Graafstra had implanted was 12mm long and 2mm in diameter — about the size of a grain of rice. RFID chips work by storing a unique identification number in the microchip. This number can be retrieved by a special RFID reader that is held within close proximity. Graafstra notes that his chip can be read from a distance of about 2 inches (5cm), and only provides the single identifying number.

Describing himself as a long-time tinkerer, Graafstra’s comments do not show much of a hesitation to perform this process. “I like to mod things, and I guess it was only natural that it extended to my own body,” he wrote in an email to Wikinews.

Graafstra appears to have been impressed by the process, too. “It was odd feeling it [the chip] being pushed under the surface of my skin… without feeling pain, I was able to really get a feel for just how utilitarian our bodies actually are and how… separate the skin layer really is from the muscle layer under it,” he told Wikinews. He was able to use his hand to perform technical computer maintenance just an hour after the procedure.

RFID is a controversial technology. Privacy advocates fear that the technology might be abused by governments and used to track people. Microchip implants have been used for years for tracking lost pets.

The pictures that Graafstra posted spurred commentary in the blogosphere, with some assuming that the pictures — or the process — were faked. Graafstra denies this, and posted a short video of himself triggering the RFID reader with a swipe of his hand.

Trial against Church of Scientology begins in France

Trial against Church of Scientology begins in France

Monday, May 25, 2009

The Church of Scientology in France is in court today, fighting charges that the organization has been a part of “escroquerie en bande organisee”, organized fraud. Prosecutors claim that the Church is engaged in illicit practices in attempts to sell their alleged self-help material. The Church also faces charges of illegally operating as a pharmacy by illegally treating individuals with prescription medications.

The charges come from an unnamed woman, who in 1998 purchased nearly 21,000 euros (US$30,000) worth of Scientology self-help material which allegedly included prescription drugs. After a few months passed, the woman said she felt like she was being scammed because her condition was not improving. Lawyers for the woman say the Church tries to make a profit by pressuring individuals into believing they are going to be cured of their illnesses.

She claims she spent her entire life savings on the organization’s products, including Scientology books, vitamins, and a device called an E-meter. Her attorneys say they will attempt to show that organized criminal fraud is inherent within Scientology practices. There were originally a total of five plaintiffs in the case, however three withdrew their complaints after coming to financial settlements with the Church of Scientology.

Following several complaints from other unnamed individuals and an investigation, investigating magistrate Jean-Christophe Hullin in January, ordered the Church’s “Celebrity Center” and bookstore in France and its seven managers to be put on trial for fraud and “illegally practicing as pharmacists”. Hullin stated that the Scientology organization is driven by “an absolute obsession with profit”, and is “first and foremost a commercial organisation”. Sophie-Helene Chateau, presiding judge in the case, stated that the court’s purpose is “to find whether the acts in question constitute a crime. … It is not up to the court to decide questions of society”.

If convicted, the managers of the Scientology organization in France under investigation could serve a ten year jail sentence in addition to a fine of one million euros. Those investigated include the Scientology Celebrity Centre in Paris itself, its manager Alain Rosenberg, and five other individuals. Rosenberg is the CEO of the Spiritual Association of the Church of Scientology-Celebrity Centre (ASES-CC), the official term for the Church of Scientology in France. One defendant died since the charges were initially filed against seven managers in the Scientology organization. The defendants are accused of “exerting a psychological hold” on vulnerable individuals so they would give money to Scientology.

The special treatment reserved for the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center raises questions about the equality of the justice system and the presumption of innocence.

In September of 2008, the Church released a statement saying that they felt “stigmatized” by the French judicial system.

“The special treatment reserved for the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center raises questions about the equality of the justice system and the presumption of innocence,” the Church said in a statement to the press. The Church denies all the charges and says that no one was manipulated into buying their material.

“If the church’s methods prove to be crooked then we must ask serious questions about whether it can be allowed to remain in business on French high streets.”

“If the church’s methods prove to be crooked then we must ask serious questions about whether it can be allowed to remain in business on French high streets,” said plaintiff’s attorney Olivier Maurice. If the Church is found guilty, Scientology could be fined approximately 5 million euros (US$7 million) and ordered banned in France. If banned in France, the Scientology organization then has the option to appeal, which could drag out the legal process. The trial will run until June 17.

According to French law the Scientology organization is regarded as a sect in the country, and not a religion. In 2006, a report of the parliament in France characterized Scientology as a “dangerous sect”. This is not the first time the Church has been accused of fraud in France. They have also been convicted of it several times, including the Church’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard who was convicted of fraud in 1978. In 1997 the Church was convicted of fraud in Lyon and 1999 in Marseille. “There are those who handed over tens of thousands of francs at the time. Now, it can be 300,000 euros per person, or more,” said Roger Gonet, a French former Scientologist who was a plaintiff against the organization in 1996. The 1978 convictions included Hubbard and his wife at the time, Mary Sue, both now deceased, and two other Scientologists. Hubbard, along with the two Scientologists fled France, never to return, and never served a prison term.

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

">
Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

Four dead, more than a million in U.S. without power after Pacific Northwest storm

">
Four dead, more than a million in U.S. without power after Pacific Northwest storm

Friday, December 15, 2006

High winds and heavy rains have left 4 people dead, and much of the Seattle, Washington area is without electrical power. A number of large trees have been downed and heavy rains have caused minor flooding in many areas of the city. According to first-hand reports as many as 1 million people and several large organizations such as Microsoft are without power this morning.

Flood, storm, and strong wind watches were in effect last night as a rare thunderstorm system moved into the Pacific Northwest region, hitting areas from Seattle to Portland with high winds and heavy rains. Interstate 5 through Seattle was closed at its intersection with Mercer Street due to standing water. The State Route 520 floating bridge, a major conduit across Lake Washington to the technology-rich Eastside was closed and its drawspan opened to protect it from storm damage well into Friday. Local roads throughout the region were strewn with debris, especially evergreen branches and leaves. Authorities advised people to stay off the roads.

Four deaths were reported in connection with the storm as of Friday. A Seattle woman died in the basement of her home after floodwaters caused the basement door to close and jam shut. Two others died in outlying areas after tall Northwest evergreens fell on their vehicles, and a man in Grays Harbor, near the Pacific coast, died in his sleep after a tree fell on his mobile home. KOMO news reported a caller saying a 100-foot evergreen had fallen into his house.

Downed trees and high winds also brought down powerlines throughout Western Washington. Seattle City Light, the municipal electric utility for the city, reported a peak of 175,000 customers without power, most in the north and south ends of the city, as well as the east edge of town and the Green Lake area.

Puget Sound Energy, the electric utility for much of the Seattle metro area, reported 700,000 customers (over 66%) without power, with the area around Seattle the worst hit. PSE, which had already enlisted additional powerline workers from neighboring states, did not send crews out until mid Friday morning due to continued high winds. Estimates for power restoration were anywhere from a few days to over a week. Island County, at the mouth of Puget Sound, was completely without power.

Schools in Seattle and throughout its suburbs were closed Friday, many due to power outages. The city of Mercer Island, connected to the mainland only by Interstate 90, is reportedly inaccessible.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer failed to print due to power failures at the printing facility, which had redundant power feeds from both the Seattle utility as well as PSE. It is the first time in 70 years that the paper has not been printed. The Seattle Times, a competing paper under a joint operating agreement, managed to print only 13,000 copies of its regular circulation of over 200,000. The papers located alternate facilities to print a reduced version of their Saturday editions, and their joint Sunday issue was also expected to be reduced.

At Sea-Tac Airport, three terminals were shut down overnight due to the storm. Concourse A and the South Satellite terminal lost power, and a blown-out window caused Concourse C to also close. All terminals were back in working order by midday Friday. Many flights were delayed or cancelled. Likewise, in Oregon, Portland International Airport reported at least 40 flights cancelled. At Seattle’s Boeing Field, winds flipped a private plane over, colliding with another plane.

The Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers football game was delayed 15 minutes. A pre-game power surge temporarily took the Qwest Field’s video displays offline. The gridiron was plagued by standing water, as the stadium’s loudspeakers played “Who’ll Stop The Rain?” shortly before kickoff.

Thursday night’s storm comes after a previous regional storm in the Seattle area earlier in the week, in which trees in a few Seattle suburbs fell onto roads, powerlines, and two school buses. In those incidents no one was hurt, and there were a few spotty power outages.

This is the second serious storm to hit the Northwest since Thanksgiving, In late November, record-setting snowfall had a similar disabling effect on the region.

Airstream Trailer

By Greg Ryan

The Airstream trailer has indeed withstood the test of time. Since its debut in the 1930s, it has been a popular part of the American tradition and has symbolized the many things people love: the outdoors, travel, and family gatherings, finding ones self in a solitary stretch of the road, while aboard an Airstream trailer.

But Airstream trailers are not merely vessels of travel. This time, the trend is for these historic icons to be symbols of what Americans are fighting for, a renewed and healthier environment.

Because an Airstream trailer is practically a modular component of a home, it is not as difficult to convert one as an eco-friendly model. The idea is so innovative that it has piqued the interest of a lot of people.

Here are possible innovations that could be done on an Airstream trailer:

Consider an eco-friendly toilet

It might not sound so appealing, and people might not even want to think about this, but choosing to incorporate a composting toilet would help Mother Nature a lot. Of course, as owner, you would not have to be the one in charge of maintenance. But your decision to be more environmental when you buy or renovate your Airstream trailer can spur a lot of positive change.

Install Solar Panels

Although these are not to be your main source of energy, considering that there is no guarantee of a continuing supply of sunlight when you are traveling, still, you could save a lot more money by having solar panels installed. As they say, the blessings of the sun should be appreciated while it is still there.

Use recycled materials

When you look at the inside of an Airstream trailer, you would see furniture and fixtures made of metal and steel. Why not choose to use recycled steel and recycled metal? These materials are widely available, and although you may spend up more in having these processed, in the end you will benefit more. The fact that you have contributed to the reduction of the use of these materials clearly shows your concern for the environment.

There are still a lot of things that you can do with your Airstream trailer to make it more eco-friendly. Just remember that the reason why you bought your Airstream trailer is precisely so that you can commune with nature. This, you can do better, by being one with the cause of preserving nature.

Airstream Trailers deliver quality in construction. It doesn’t matter whether you are buying a top of the line traveling paradise, or a more reasonable priced family travel vehicle, you can rest assured that you will have purchased a quality trailer that features a specially designed frame, body, and running gear, along with hosting a plethora of amenity choices. If you are in need of something a little larger, look no further.

Airstream offers two deluxe lines; they’re known as the International and Classic lines. These Airstreams will make you feel like your residing in a spacious condo. They are completely self-contained and sport all of the necessities, which of course include water and sewer hookups.

No Change Or Straight Talk, Just Flip Flop

No Change Or Straight Talk, Just Flip Flop

by

James William Smith

I watched the HBO miniseries on John Adams during the fourth of July weekend. The miniseries is based on the book by David McCullough on the second President of the United States. The movie portrays a somewhat vain fellow who was not a very skilled diplomat and detested the notion of compromise.

However, Adams was an passionate guy when it came to independence and the issues that the fledgling United States government faced. Certainly, John Adams did not lack for conviction on how to solve the issues of his day. The passion for solutions to the problems of the early years of this country stand in stark contrast to our Presidential candidates’ consultant, poll driven, media obsessed, national marketing campaigns of today. In the 2008 Presidential election there is one candidate (Barack Obama) running on a campaign platform of hope and government change. The other candidate, (John McCain) drives a bus and flies on a plane adorned with the campaign slogan, “The Straight Talk Express”. However, so far, in this 2008 presidential election campaign, there is very little straight talk while change is a political slogan without much substance. In fact, the only thing both major party candidates have achieved so far is to confuse the voter about what each of their respective campaigns actually stands for. Indeed, the partisans in each political party will say that their candidate is pure and it is really the other guy who shifts positions on issues to fit each changing political breeze. The record shows that these political partisans are wrong and that both candidates read from the same tired, old, campaign playbook. Barack Obama is the Democrats new age candidate of “hope” and “change”. His campaign is currently running an ad in the mid west that states that he voted for reforming welfare several years ago. The truth is that he actually voted against it when his vote counted. It well may be that he supports welfare reform today, but he did not back then. It is only one example of the disingenuous political “flip flops” in his campaign during the last several weeks. Earlier in the year, Obama pledged to use public financing as long as his Republican opponent did. He stated; “If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election.” Of course there will be no pursuit of that agreement now that Obama has discovered that he can raise more money than his rival from private donors for the general election campaign. Also, consider that it was only five months ago that Barack Obama voted against a Senate bill providing retroactive immunity to telecom companies that provided information to American intelligence communities. In fact, Obama was very vocal against providing immunity for this type of surveillance which was used after 9/11 to follow-up on leads of domestic terrorist communications coming from overseas. However, last week, Obama voted “yes” on the new FISA bill that provides the same retroactive immunity that he so vigorously campaigned against just a few short months back. Indeed, recent Obama political “flip flops” seem to go on and on. Today Obama believes in gun ownership rights and says he always believed in them. However, past interviews with him on that subject reflect a much different stance on the issue. His position has changed on the issue of taxes. In 2006, he voted against extending write-offs for small businesses and the Bush tax cuts to the capital-gains rates. In addition, he has long assailed Bush’s “tax breaks for big corporations and wealthy CEOs.” However, recently, he told the Wall Street Journal that corporate tax rates could be reduced after eliminating loopholes. Everyone should remember Barack Obama’s position during the Democratic Primary on the war in Iraq. He had set a firm Iraq withdrawal timetable of 16 months. Now, the campaign’s position as stated by his foreign policy advisor, Susan Rice on MSNBC indicates that Obama would “redeploy our forces responsibly, at a rate that our commanders say is safe and sustainable.” Also, Obama has stated that an upcoming trip to Iraq will help to “refine” his policies. Obama’s flip flops even extend to his family’s role in his national campaign. Two weeks ago, he allowed both his daughters to be interviewed by the national media. Last week he said that in retrospect he regretted allowing that interview and probably would not do it again. The Straight Talk Express of Republican John McCain is certainly matching Barack Obama in the area of political flip flops. McCain previously supported an oil drilling moratorium, now he is against it. Also, he was comfortable with a windfall tax on oil companies, now suddenly he opposes it. McCain was against the current Bush wiretap program, now he is for it. He wanted to privatize Social Security, now he is against it. He used to think that the estate tax was fair, now he doesn’t. He has opposed indefinite detention of terrorist suspects. However, when the Supreme Court recently came to the same conclusion, he called it one of the worst decisions in the history of this country. There are many more examples of recent issue “flip flops” by both candidates, but by now the picture should be clear. It’s not about solutions to problems or consistent intellectual positions on the issues. Sadly, it’s all about polls, consultants, and media sound bites designed for the sole purpose of getting elected to the Oval Office in November. Therefore, this 2008 Presidential election is not about change, or straight talk, just “flip flop”.

Russian territory expands by 4.5 square kilometres after seismic activity

Saturday, November 14, 2009

According to scientists, the land territory of Russia has expanded by about 4.5 square kilometres within the last few years in the Far East due to seismic and volcanic activity.

The gained land was recorded in the Sakhalin Peninsula. Boris Levin, head of the Institute for Sea Geology and Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that the increase happened primarily due to two seismic events.

The first, in August of 2007, was when a heavy 6.8 earthquake near the city of Nevelsk in the Far East raised about three square kilometres of seabed above the level of the water. The second was in June of this year, when the Sarychev Peak volcano on the Matua Island erupted. GPS trackers on the Matua island were used to monitor the eruption, and the volcano changed its shape, adding 1.5 square kilometres of land, scientists said.

Geologists also reported that the Kuril Islands nearby were slowly moving towards mainland Russia at an estimated rate of eighteen milimetres per year.
