Police charge man over fatal hit and run in Birmingham, UK

Monday, February 18, 2013

In the United Kingdom, West Midlands Police charged a 26-year-old man with causing death by dangerous driving after an 80-year-old woman died following a hit and run incident in the Yardley area of the city of Birmingham. The man’s court appearance was scheduled for today.

The woman was hit at approximately 11:30am GMT Saturday while attempting to cross the street on Coventry Road. According to Claire Thomas, speaking on behalf of the West Midlands Ambulance Service, when paramedics arrived at the incident scene they found she had “multiple serious injuries and was in cardiac arrest”. They performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the woman but “despite their best efforts, nothing could be done”, Thomas recounted, and the woman was pronounced dead. As of Sunday evening, the woman had not yet been publicly identified, although police had told her family about her death.

The driver of the vehicle that hit her failed to stop at the scene, according to police. Police said they subsequently discovered a car about six miles from the scene, in the town of Solihull, which they believe is the vehicle used in the incident. The alleged driver of the car turned himself in and was arrested at the police station in the Stechford area of Birmingham.

4 Tips for Eliminating the Ums and Uhs in Public Speaking, You Know?

One of the most annoying traits among some public speakers, be they professional or novice, is verbal disfluency. According to Wikipedia, verbal disfluencies are, ‘any of various breaks, irregularities, or utterances that are often not consistent with any specific grammatical construction and occur within the flow of otherwise fluent speech.” What is important to note is the fact that disfluencies interrupt smooth speech.

Including, ums, ahs, uhs, and the overused expressions, you know and like, verbal disfluencies are something you should concentrate on eliminating if you are aware that you use them. They hinder the concentration of your audience who often stops listening to your words and instead starts counting your ahs. One of the reasons we use ums or ahs is as a filler sound because we do not allow ourselves to pause by means of silence. The pause is very effective as long as it is not overused. You can eliminate your verbal disfluencies by means of the following tips. 1. Record yourself when you are practicing your speech or presentation. [More than likely, your ums and ahs will not happen in a prepared speech because you are reading from a script; however, it will be more apparent in a presentation in which you are speaking around notes or slides.] 2. Study the recording and listen to yourself. Concentrate on when and how often you say these utterances. This is very important as you need to begin to recognize when it is happening. 3. Record yourself again and concentrate on listening to yourself as you speak. Instead of saying the um or ah when you feel it trying to slip out of your mouth, pause, take a quick breath, and then continue speaking. 4. In general, pay more attention to yourself when you are talking, be it in conversation or over the phone, noting if it is happening in more casual settings as well. Your reason for public speaking is to impart a message. If that message is replete with um, ah, like, and you know, then your audience will concentrate less on your message and more on your interrupters. Projecting a confident image and sounding professional involves eliminating bad habits and establishing good ones. You are judged not only by what you say but by how you say it; therefore, it is your responsibility to do the best job you can. And that is not possible, if your delivery is marred by oft-repeated sounds or words, you know?

US Transportation Security Administration “made inaccurate statements” about passenger privacy, says Department of Homeland Security report

US Transportation Security Administration “made inaccurate statements” about passenger privacy, says Department of Homeland Security report

Tuesday, March 29, 2005In a report from the Department of Homeland Security released on Friday, March 25, they allege the US Transportation Security Administration “made inaccurate statements” about its management of personal data belonging to passengers. The report claims, “TSA did not ensure that privacy protections were in place” as it handled data transfers to private contractors for use in the development of a computerized passenger screening application, called CAPPS II. While the report criticizes TSA for its inaccurate statements, it notes the “misstatements were apparently not meant to mischaracterize known facts,” but were instead “premised on an incomplete understanding” of the truth.

According to the report, the data at issue described passengers flying on the following airlines: America West Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, and JetBlue Airways. In most of the problematic transfers, the privacy violation occurred by allowing third parties to access passenger data that was not anonymized. In one case, passenger information was made public on the internet through a presentation prepared by Torch Concepts. According to the report, “Torch Concepts’ subsequent efforts to remove the presentation from the internet have failed.”

In an AP report, Yahoo! News notes that TSA announced the launch of its “Secure Flight” system, saying, “Congress has said the agency can’t proceed with Secure Flight unless the Government Accountability Office reports that the technology ensures privacy and that the data are protected.” The report from the GAO was to be released Monday, March 27, 2005.

Our hair goes through a lot because of styling and constant chemical usage for several purposes. If one loves to color hair frequently and sport distinctive dos, another would just like to play around the look every other day by going for a perm or straight hair, while some will love to use styling gels or sprays for sporting trendy hair styles. Whatever the reason is, you put your hair through lots of stress and strain. Likewise, using dryer, curling irons, hair straighteners or other products loaded with chemicals, hair becomes dry, frizzy and lifeless. It is possible to reclaim your hair health? How to gain that head turning locks, once more?

Hair serum is one product that could do wonders for hair that has undergone enormous stress. It can nourish, moisturize and protect hair. Furthermore, it gives back the lost luster and shine, so you can sport trendy dos once more. It can also protect your hair from harmful UV rays. Even so, choosing the right serum is important. Like how many cosmetics are now laden with chemicals and animal products, hair serums are also lost in the numbers game. But, the key is choosing the right product. Try to find a high quality, vegan and all-natural hair serum for best results. Ensure it is sulphates, alcohol and salt free, since these can rob hair’s moisture. Especially, select a product that has Argan oil infused in it. A hair serum that has Argan oil as its base and nourishing herbal infusions is the best option. Likewise, hair conditioner is a very important product that can restore your hair’s moisture and luster. There are two types, one wash off conditioner and the other, leave-in conditioner. You can select what works for you. Generally, when you wash your hair, moisture is washed away and that leaves your hair dull and brittle. Some prefer wash-away variant, while some prefer leave-in ones as they’re milder. There are some conditioners that can be used as a daily moisturizer. Much like the serum, the results boil down to the grade of the product you opt for. Select one that has Argan Oil as the main ingredient and perhaps hair-friendly herbs. It can offer nourishment, moisture and, rejuvenate or repair your hair. Ensure they’re salt, alcohol and sulphate free.So what herbal extracts do you search for? Ingredients like Rosemary leaf oil, Kava Kava, Wheat Germ Oil, Jojoba Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Sea Buckthorn and Sweet Almond Oil are great add-ins to Argan Oil. They balance and complete the hair care requirements. The combination ensures one’s problems like dandruff, hair loss, hair thinning, frizzy or lifeless hair, dry or damaged hair, etc. are taken care of. In the end, you want to nourish, moisturize and also rejuvenate and repair your hair. Right? Only then will your hair look lustrous, voluminous and luminous. If you care about your hair, this plunge is definitely worth it. It is said hair is the crowning glory of women and certainly, has to be cared for. Isn’t it?

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

Monday, September 7, 2015

The US economy added 173,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 to 5.1 percent, the lowest since April 2008.

Although August job gains were lower than most economists forecast, job growth numbers for June and July were revised upwards by a combined 44,000. Average job gains over the past three months stand at 221,000, compared to March-May’s 189,000 monthly average. Over the past twelve months, job growth has averaged 247,000 per month.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent, or 8 cents, marking the largest increase in earnings in seven months. Hourly earnings had risen by 6 cents in July. Wages have risen by 2.2 percent over the past year.

Job growth in August was primarily concentrated in the health care and social assistance, financial activities, and professional and business services sectors. Those three areas of the economy added a combined 108,000 jobs. Food service and drinking places employment increased by 26,000 over the month, and other economic sectors saw employment hold steady. Manufacturing, on the other hand, saw employment decline by 17,000 in August. A stronger dollar and worldwide economic weakness make US exports less desirable, leading to a flattening in manufacturing employment so far this year after steadily rising in the early years of the US economic recovery.

The solid overall job gains led analysts to slightly raise expectations for a decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Investors raised the likelihood of a September rate increase from 26 percent before the jobs report to 30 percent, and stocks dropped by over one percent on Friday. “The payrolls data is certainly good enough to allow for a Fed rate hike in September,” said Deutsche Bank’s head of currency strategy, Alan Ruskin. “The big question is still whether financial market volatility will scupper the plans.”

“This is the first time the market has looked at a Fed meeting and really has no idea what the Fed is going to do,” said Mark Kepner, a New Jersey equity trader with Themis Trading. “Right now you’re looking at the overall uncertainty and that’s what’s hanging on the market. I don’t think this number in and of itself changes how somebody’s going to vote.”

Canadian nuclear reactor shutdown causes worldwide medical isotope shortage

Canadian nuclear reactor shutdown causes worldwide medical isotope shortage

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

The nuclear reactor at Chalk River, Ontario in Canada was shut down on Thursday, May 14 by the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) due to a leak of heavy water. Government officials say that by Saturday the demand for medical isotopes will no longer be met, due to the shortage caused by the closure.

Medical isotopes are used in diagnostic procedures for cancer, heart disease and other medical conditions. When radioactive isotopes are injected into the body, radiologists can view higher radiation via medical imaging, enabling them to make a more accurate diagnosis.

Estimates suggest that the reactor will be shut down for approximately one month for repairs. The Chalk River Laboratories produce 33% of the international supply of medical isotopes.

Lisa Raitt, Natural Resources Minister said, “A secure supply of medical isotopes is not only an issue for Canada, it is an international issue that is being addressed co-operatively by all isotope-producing countries.”

“It may mean that if you have an elective study booked … that patient is going to be deferred and will have to wait until the situation is resolved. I’m reasonably confident that for most patients, if they’re having an acute problem, that problem is going to be dealt with – and the greater the acuity, the more likelihood it’s going to be dealt with quickly and expeditiously,” said Dr. Karen Gulenchyn, a nuclear medicine expert.

“The government of Canada is engaging international isotope producers as well as companies such as MDS Nordion, Lantheus, and Covidien, who all play key roles in securing medical isotope supply for North America,” said Raitt and Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq.

In December 2007, the 52-year-old reactor was shut down and the Canadian House of Common stepped in to restart the reactor.

Dog Online Training Works!

A large number of dogs exhibit calm, agreeablebehavior on a regular basis, although certain dogs are known for theirhostile, protective personality, and are thus utilized as securityanimals. In order to address the differences in personality, as well asthe differences in food, physical, and health needs of the various dogbreeds, online dog training must make accommodations to meet eachbreeds individual requirements. Training Procedures Prior to beginning any training program, you should conduct the necessary research, to ensure that the chosen program will work well for your home and your dog. Thousands of dogs are placed in dog pounds annually since owners didn’t learn all there is to know about training their animal. Online training isn’t for everyone, as you won’t have one on one instruction to make sure you’re not harming the dog with improper methods, but with care you can properly train your dog while saving money. It’s important to research your dog’s breed, as different dogs will learn at different speeds. Needs for Healthcare You can ensure the continued health of your pet by having it checked out by a vet before and after you begin training, as the dog may have underlying health issues that could be exacerbated by certain kinds of training. It is vital to visit your veterinarian regularly, as genetic health conditions can show up at any time, and purebred dogs are especially susceptible to these disorders that can be passed down. Along with online dog training, you should ensure that your dog remains physically healthy and at an appropriate weight, through regular veterinary consultations and exercise. Necessities for Training In order to guarantee that you raise a dog that is well trained as a house pet, online dog training should begin in the puppy stage, this is even more critical if it is obedience training. A dog that has not been trained how to behave properly in the home, is more likely to be destructive, or become injured, because they don’t know any better. It’s common for dogs to exhibit behaviors such as getting underfoot or jumping up, which can end up causing harm to either the dog or the owner if the owner isn’t paying attention. Training your dog early on in his life teaches him proper etiquette and enables him to be a house dog that is part of the family. A dissatisfied dog can be taught to avoid damaging behavior through correct training methods. Even though extra effort is sometimes required when utilizing online dog training, you’re often able to save money while still enjoying the same end results of a pleasant, well adjusted pet that behaves itself and you can be proud to show off to your friends. Hospitals declare “code red” in Wellington, New Zealand

Hospitals declare “code red” in Wellington, New Zealand

Thursday, July 19, 2007

The Capital & Coast District Health Board today issued a “code red” for two Wellington hospitals. Both Wellington Hospital and Kenepuru Community Hospital have a staff shortage of about 20 nurses, and the hospital is calling on any help available.

Dr Robyn Toomath, director of clinical support services at the Health Board, is calling for “any qualified nurses in the community who are between jobs, are on extended leave or are semi-retired, who might be able to help fill in, or to do some short term work for us.”

“As of today we are around 20 nurses down compared to our usual staffing levels, primarily due to illness” said Dr Toomath. “We have physical beds available, but we can’t admit patients unless there are appropriate levels of staff to safely resource those beds.”

The message to the general public was to “please save our Emergency Department for emergencies”, she said. “We want to be able to focus our Emergency Department resources on patients who genuinely need hospital-level care.”

Any qualified nurses who are willing to help at either of the two hospitals should contact Steve Crew in the Patient Services Coordination Unit, at the Capital and Coast District Health Board.

Fiddle Legend Vassar Clements dead at 77

">
Fiddle Legend Vassar Clements dead at 77

Wednesday, August 17, 2005

Vassar Clements, age 77, a legendary fiddle player who took bluegrass music from an obscure cultural art form to a mainstream influence, and who played on over 2000 albums, passed away at his Goodlettsville, Tennessee home August 16th 2005 at 8:35 am Nashville time (CST) from lung cancer which had metastasized to his liver and brain.

Mr. Clements taught himself to play the fiddle at age 7, and though he had no formal training was recognized as one of the world’s most versatile fiddle players and was considered a virtuoso. The first song he learned was “There’s an Old Spinning Wheel in the Parlor”. He described his talent saying, “It was God’s gift, something born in me. I was too dumb to learn it any other way. I listened to the (Grand Ole) Opry some. I’d pick it up one note at a time. I was young, with plenty of time and I didn’t give up. You’d come home from school, do your lessons and that’s it. No other distractions. I don’t read music. I play what I hear.”

He didn’t always earn his living playing music, though. In the mid-1960s he was employed briefly at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where he worked on plumbing. He also performed several other blue-collar jobs including work in a Georgia paper mill, as switchman for Atlantic Coast Railroad; he even sold insurance and once owned a potato chip franchise.

In his 50 year career he played with artists ranging from Woody Herman, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to The Grateful Dead, Linda Ronstadt and Paul McCartney, and earned at least five Grammy nominations and numerous professional accolades. He once recorded with the pop group the Monkees by happenstance, when he stayed behind after an earlier recording session. He also appeared in Robert Altman‘s 1975 film “Nashville”.

His 2005 Grammy award for best country instrumental performance was for “Earl’s Breakdown,” by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and featured Mr. Clements, Earl Scruggs, Randy Scruggs and Jerry Douglas.

Mr. Clements, whose last performance was February 4 in Jamestown, N.Y., was hospitalized earlier this year for 18 days to receive chemotherapy and other treatment. He had been diagnosed in March 2005.

Born in Kinard, South Carolina, his musical career began at age 14 when he associated with Bill Monroe, and later officially joined the Blue Grass Boys band where he remained for seven years. In 1957 he joined bluegrass band Jim & Jesse McReynolds where he remained until 1962. In 1967 he returned to Nashville where he became a much sought after studio musician.

After a brief touring stint with Faron Young he joined John Hartford‘s Dobrolic Plectral Society in 1971 when he met guitarist Norman Blake and Dobro player Tut Taylor, and recorded Aereo Plain, a widely acclaimed newgrass album that helped broaden the bluegrass market and sound. After less than a year he joined Earl Scruggs, who first earned widespread renown for playing the theme to sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies.

His 1972 work with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on their album Will the Circle Be Unbroken earned him even wider acclaim, and later worked with the Grateful Dead’s Wake of the Flood and Jimmy Buffett‘s A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean.

Though he played numerous instruments, Mr. Clements indicated that he chose the fiddle over guitar recalling that, “I picked up a guitar and fiddle and tried them both out. The guitar was pretty easy, but I couldn’t get nothing out of the fiddle. So every time I’d see those instruments sitting side by side, I’d grab that fiddle.”

Big band and swing music were considerable influences upon his style and musical development, and he said that, “Bands like Glenn Miller, Les Brown, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James and Artie Shaw were very popular when I was a kid. I always loved rhythm, so I guess in the back of my mind the swing and jazz subconsciously comes out when I play, because when I was learning I was always trying to emulate the big-band sounds I heard on my fiddle.”

His last album ‘Livin’ With the Blues’, released in 2004, featured guest appearances by Elvin Bishop, Norton Buffalo, Maria Muldaur and others.

Mr. Clements’ daughter Midge Cranor wrote on his website [1] that “As I was still holding his hand his breathing stopped. I looked at the clock and it was 7:20 am.”

Mr. Clements’ remains have been transported to Bond Memorial Chapel, 1098 Weston Drive, Mt. Juliet, TN 37122; (615) 773-2663.
