Study shows that aspirin might do more harm than good

Study shows that aspirin might do more harm than good

Monday, August 31, 2009

A study performed at Edinburgh University, Scotland has shown that aspirin may do more harm to your health than good.

The research at the university in Scotland was to assess the effects of taking aspirin on a daily basis where no prior or existing medical conditions would merit its prescription. The researchers monitored 3,350 patients aged between 50–75, who were thought to be at risk of heart disease, but did not show any significant symptoms at the start of the study. Over an eight-year time period, 181 of those people taking aspirin had heart attacks or strokes.

More than 3,000 men aged 50–75 were randomly assigned to receive a daily dose of aspirin or a placebo pill and were watched over the eight year time period. There were 34 major bleeds in people taking aspirin, or 2%, in comparison to 1.2% of those who took the placebo. The Aspirin for Asymptomatic Atherosclerosis (AAA) have found that the routine use of aspirin does not prevent vascular disease or conditions and the use of it “could not be supported.”

Peter Weissberg, a professor at the British Heart Foundation, the company which was partly responsible in funding for the trials said, “we know that patients with symptoms of artery disease, such as angina, heart attack or stroke, can reduce their risk of further problems by taking a small dose of aspirin each day. The findings of this study agree with our current advice that people who do not have symptomatic or diagnosed artery or heart disease should not take aspirin, because the risks of bleeding may outweigh the benefits. Because it’s been around for a long time, people think, ‘It must be safe and it can’t do any harm’. They are taking it ‘just in case’ but it’s much more dangerous than some other drugs that people get concerned about, like statins.”

Professor Gerry Fowkes presented the research from the University of Edinburgh at the European Society of Cardiology congress in Barcelona, Spain, which was attended by more than 30,000 heart specialists.

“Our research suggests that aspirin should not be prescribed to the general population, although it does have benefits for people with established heart disease or other conditions,” stated Fowkes.

Three Unfamiliar Mexican Meals That Can Be Made With Hispanic Food Distribution In Connecticut

byadmin

Some owners of Mexican restaurants want to offer their patrons certain dishes that aren’t as familiar to U.S. residents as the tried-and-true burritos, enchiladas, and tacos. With commercial Hispanic Food Distribution in Connecticut, they can easily obtain all the ingredients they need for the chefs to craft delicious cuisine and introduce these unfamiliar dishes to customers.

Carnitas, for instance, are made with meat cooked very slowly, as in a crock pot or simmered for a long time on the stove. This allows them to thoroughly absorb any spices added to the cooking process and also makes the meat delightfully tender. Onions and bell peppers can be included as well. Small or medium-sized tortillas are wrapped around this filling in soft-shell taco style. Pork is the traditional choice of meat, but other kinds can be substituted. The meal may be served with avocado slices, rice and a side of beans. Chefs can acquire all these foods from a company specializing in hispanic food distribution in Connecticut.

Barbacoa is another style of cooking that many U.S. residents are unfamiliar with. It involves steaming meat while also smoking it. An example of how someone might do this at home would be to place a pot of hot water inside a barbecue grill in the midst of hot charcoal. A small flat grill is placed on top of the pot, and meat then placed on the grill. The barbecue device is covered, allowing the charcoal aroma to be absorbed by the steamed meat.Traditionally, residents of Mexico and the Caribbean employed this cooking style to use up parts of animals that aren’t appealing to most U.S. residents. For instance, they might have cooked a cow head in this manner. A restaurant in Connecticut is more likely to use cuts of goat meat, lamb or pork that Northeasterners generally find more enticing.

A baked round of dough that features cheese, meat and possibly refried beans and other vegetables is known as a gordita. That’s another tasty meal a chef can create with ingredients from a commercial Mexican food supplier. Chefs may want to learn About Best Mexican Foods, one of the suppliers in this region.

US intercity passenger train collides with truck, derails

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

An Amtrak passenger train de-railed after hitting a pickup truck in Plant City, Florida, in the United States. The driver of the pickup truck was killed on impact. The crash occurred at a marked railroad crossing inside of an industrial area, according to an Amtrak spokesperson.

None of the 133 passengers were seriously hurt, however, the train’s engineer and five passengers were taken to a local hospital after suffering minor injuries. The remaining passengers were taken to a local bowling alley. Although the train’s two locomotives and nine cars de-railed, they remained upright.

Witnesses report the train sounded its horns at the appropriate times. It was reported the pickup truck simply drove in front of the train.

The crash is the second to occur this week with a train; on Monday, a driver in a Pontiac Grand Am deliberately ignored the lights and crossing arms at another railroad crossing in the area, and drove around them, into the path of a different Amtrak train on the same route. The impact caused the car to go airborne. All four people in the car were killed; no one on the train was injured.

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

The Convenience Of The Battery Tender}

Submitted by: Donaldson. Matt

Man is extremely reliant on machinery to improve his quality of living and to make life easier for himself ever since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Unlike the famous myth of something that can give so-called perpetual motion which enables machine to run on its own with just initial energymachinery need to be constantly fed some kind of fuel to convert the potential energy to kinetic energy which results in motion. What man has come up to keep the machine in motion comes in different forms, one of which is the battery. Batteries are composed of many cells that are electrochemical solutions. For vehicles, the most common is the lead acid battery. Unfortunately, the battery solution needs to be charged from time to time unless one wants to replace it.

There are other methods in charging but in this article, we will focus on the battery tender. The battery tender was made by the Deltran Corporation so that the battery tender is also known as the Deltran battery tenders. The battery tenders function is a bit different from other simpler chargers. Other chargers, like the trickle charger, just keeps on charging with no sensing whatsoever if the device or battery being charged is already up to its limit; the battery tender, on the other hand, stops charging the battery when it senses that the battery has reached its limit.

The reason that battery tenders are able to this unlike its simpler and older charger counterparts is that the circuitry was made to be sensitive to the voltage of the battery being charged. Once the battery is already fully charged, the battery tender stops charging; it will only resume charging once it senses that the batterys voltage was lower than when it was fully charged.

The battery tenders emergence since its invention is much preferred compared to other battery chargers because of its advantages. For one, it protects the battery from damages of overcharging. This improves the life of the battery which will mean less hassle for the owner of the machine. Another thing is that the owner of the machine does not have to constantly keep a look out on his machine while it is charging; it can be said that the battery tender offers time and convenience to its users.

Ever since the production and invention of machines, technology has been built and kept on developing on a fast and steady pace. One of the more useful developments can be found in the battery section or more specifically, battery chargers. With the improvement from simple battery chargers to the truly useful battery tenders, one can say that it has not only offered an end to the hassles that other older battery chargers give, it has offered ease to the users of the machine in both time, effort and money. It will do a whole lot of good to other people looking for efficient and intelligent battery chargers to switch to the useful battery tender for their charging purposes.

On bereavement and acceptance: Yale study of grief process

">
On bereavement and acceptance: Yale study of grief process

Thursday, February 22, 2007

Denial. Anger. Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance.

Originally formulated in 1973 by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, these five stages are well-known to many as the “Five Stages of Grief“. However, despite their familiarity, the five-stage theory had remained untested empirically, until Paul K. Maciejewski, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine and the Yale Bereavement Study completed several years of research, findings for which were published in the February 21 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

According to Dr. Kübler-Ross’s theory, denial is the first and most defining indicator of grief. The Yale Bereavement Study’s findings, in contrast, show acceptance to be the most common indicator, and yearning the strongest negative indicator.

The authors explain, “Disbelief decreased from an initial high at one month postloss, yearning peaked at four months postloss, anger peaked at five months postloss, and depression peaked at six months postloss. Acceptance increased steadily through the study observation period ending at 24 months postloss.”

Study author Holly Prigerson, associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and director of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute‘s Center for Psycho-Oncology and Palliative Care Research, says, “This would suggest that people who have extreme levels of depression, anger or yearning beyond six months would be those who might benefit from a better mental health evaluation and possible referral for treatment.”

The Yale Bereavement Study followed the progress of 233 participants from January 2000 through January 2003 who had lost family, most often a spouse, and was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the Center for Psycho-Oncology and Palliative Care Research, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Women’s Health Research at Yale University.
