Martial Arts Styles You Can Learn At Home

Submitted by: William F. Gabriel

When it comes to learning a martial art, many people feel that they just don t have enough time in the day or the week to commit to a training program at the local gym or health club. Because they don t realize there are other viable options for martial arts training that can be learned in the comfort of their own homes, they put off training altogether.

The great thing about self-defense and martial arts training is that you can learn from a martial arts DVD anytime day or night and gain the benefits associated with learning a new discipline.

Benefits of Home Training

As with most physical activities, you will burn calories. This can contribute to a lower, healthier weight and a lower BMI.

Most people who train in martial arts styles improve their flexibility and range of motion. Tai Kwon Do and Kickboxing are excellent programs for flexibility.

Martial arts can also improve your mental well-being. In addition to exercising your neuromuscular coordination, many disciplines incorporate a spiritual element.

The martial arts help you deal with negative emotions. Most people who practice a form of martial art report greater control of their body s response to anger and fear.

Studying at home brings people a way to reduce stress. After training, many students feel refreshed and energized. They even sleep better at night.

Learning the new elements of different martial arts styles brings a feeling of accomplishment and purpose to students as they progress through the levels of a program.

Carbon monoxide protects against paralysis in MS mice

">
Carbon monoxide protects against paralysis in MS mice

Friday, January 26, 2007

Ângelo A. Chora et. al. are reporting in the Journal of Clinical Investigation this week that carbon monoxide (CO) and the heme oxygenase-1 protein protect against the symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the related mouse model of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE).

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, inflammatory disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). Although many patients are largely unaffected by their disease, MS can cause impaired mobility and disability in more severe cases.

The research group from the Gulbenkian Institute in Portugal used the EAE mouse model of MS to study the effects of the Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) protein encoded by the HMOX1 gene.

HO-1 knockout mice, lacking both copies of the gene (not producing the protein), showed a more severe progression of the disease compared to wild-type mice, having normal levels of the protein. The symptoms of the disease were reversed when the HO-1 protein expression was induced using cobalt protoporphyrin IX.

During MS attacks the body’s own immune system destroys the myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Pathogenic T helper cells are triggered by Antigen-presenting cell (APCs) within the brain stem. The disease can cycle between attacks (relapses) followed by remission, suggesting that there is an underlying regulatory system. The HO-1 protein had been identified previously as a possible candidate for a protective gene.

HO-1 degrades excess heme within the body acting as the rate controlling step when under inflammatory conditions. The HO-1 heme degradation pathway produces as products equal amounts of free heme, carbon monoxide and biliverdin.

Carbon monoxide was also shown to limit the effects of the disease. Mice were exposed to a high concentration of CO for 20 days within a chamber. Mice exposed to CO had limp tails, but were more mobile than the mice in the control experiment which displayed hind limb paralysis.

It is still unknown exactly how carbon monoxide slows down the symptoms of EAE, possibly through the mopping up of free radicals, or through promoting the binding of iron to heme (decreasing radical production).

The experiments found that HO-1 did not affect the development or function of regulatory T cells. For a beneficial effect HO-1 needed to be expressed in dendritic cells, causing inhibition of MHC-II proteins, involved in presenting antigens, and inflammatory cytokines (IFN-?).

These experiments open up new possibilities for MS therapies, involving the expression of HO-1 in suppressing the development of MS.

The article went online on the 25th January 2007 and will be printed in the Journal of Clinical Investigation in February.

Vehicle Safety Products

Submitted by: Richard Armen

If you re like many Americans, you spend a great deal of time commuting to and from work, school, and other activities. Regardless of the amount of time that you spend on the road, you should be prepared for a variety of road-related hazards. Maintaining your vehicle is a good start, and so is joining a road-side assistance program like AAA. In addition to those precautions you may want to include some of the following safety items in the trunk of your car:

1. A First Aid Kit

2. An Emergency Survival Kit (with extra food and water)

3. A flashlight

4. A Space blanket and/or poncho

Aside from all of the items mentioned above, you should also keep the tools and spare parts that you might need to get your car going. Vehicles, no matter their age, manufacturer, or quality, can and do break down. Even if you don’t consider yourself mechanically inclined, these tools are essential to getting back on the road quickly. Learn how to change a spare tire and jump a car battery, if you don’t already. Several items that you should keep in your vehicle:

1.Spare tire and the tools necessary to change the tire

2. A pair of jumper cables

3. A bottle of water

4. A bottle of motor oil

5. Duct tape

6. Road flares or reflectors

You may also want to consider a car alarm, particularly if you and your car spend a great deal of time in an urban area or an area known for car thefts, or your car is on the list of most frequently-stolen models. There is a wide-range of car alarms on the market, and many of the newer models include an automatic ignition cut-off, sirens, GPS tracking, and other high-tech features. Many companies can also install a remote ignition start and remote electronic locks although some cars now come standard with some of these features. If you are worried about car thieves, anti-theft club devices are another popular solution.

Back-up cameras are also becoming very popular in the realm of vehicle safety. Some back-up cameras are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. If you often park in environments where parallel parking is a necessity, back-up cameras can provide an easy way to keep you aware of hazards behind your vehicle. Even when just backing out of your driveway, such a camera helps you ensure that there’s nothing behind you, such as a small child, that would not be seen through your car’s rear-view mirror.

Car safety is as much about what’s in your car as how you drive your car. Always drive with your safety in mind. Avoid aggravating other drivers; road rage is a growing problem throughout the country. Other helpful hints for keeping your vehicle safe include: parking in well lit areas; removing GPS devices and radio faceplates from your dashboard and stowing them in a secure location while you’re parked; keeping other valuables hidden; and, keeping your car locked at all times.

Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. He further stated, “Unfortunately, something that should not have happened has happened and our national interest is paramount and we have reported this position to the Ministry of Sports.” ((fa))Farsi language: ????????? ?????? ?? ????? ????????? ?????? ??? ? ????? ??? ?? ?? ?? ???? ?????? ???? ? ?? ??? ???? ?? ?? ????? ???? ?? ????? ?????.

IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who currently studies at Saint Louis University in the United States and plays for the United States Chess Federation, discussed her chess career, time in Iran and the 2017 controversy, and her life in Saint Louis with a Wikinews correspondent.

Smart-1 probe ends mission with planned crash into the Moon

Tuesday, September 5, 2006

Observatories around the world watched the skies early on Sunday morning as a European space probe, the SMART-1 crash landed on the Moon; the first time a European made object has landed there and, as the first, it made quite a bang. For the culmination of its three-year mission the probe left its orbit around our nearest neighbor and smashed into the Lake of Excellence at around 4,500 mph. The impact created a brand new crater and scattered debris up to 30 miles, in contrast to the gentle touchdown of the Eagle lander (when Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon) 37 years ago.

Market maker Bernard L. Madoff arrested in $50B ‘giant Ponzi scheme’

">
Market maker Bernard L. Madoff arrested in $50B ‘giant Ponzi scheme’
Correction — January 10, 2009 This article incorrectly states that Mr Madoff attended Hofstra University Law School. His education was actually with Hofstra College, which he graduated from in 1960.

Friday, December 12, 2008

Top broker and Wall Street adviser Bernard L. Madoff, aged 70, was arrested and charged by the FBI on Thursday with a single count of securities fraud, also known as stock fraud and investment fraud. He allegedly told senior employees of his firm on Wednesday that his $50 billion business “is all just one big lie” and that it was “basically, a giant Ponzi scheme (since at least 2005).” Mr. Madoff faces up to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $5 million. FBI agent Theodore Cacioppi said Mr. Madoff’s investment advisory business had “deceived investors by operating a securities business in which he traded and lost investor money, and then paid certain investors purported returns on investment with the principal received from other, different investors, which resulted in investors’ losses of approximately $50 billion dollars.”

The former chairman of the Nasdaq Stock Market is also the founder and primary owner of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, the closely-held market-making firm he launched in 1960. The firm is one of the top market maker firms on Wall Street. He founded his family firm with an initial investment of $5,000, after attending Hofstra University Law School. He saved the money earned from a job lifeguarding at Rockaway Beach in Queens and a part time job installing underground sprinkler systems.

A force in Wall Street trading for nearly 50 years, he has been active in the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), a self-regulatory organization for the U.S. securities industry. His firm was one of the five most active firms in the development of the NASDAQ, having been known for “paying for order flow,” in other word paying a broker to execute a customer’s order through Madoff. He argued that the payment to the broker did not alter the price that the customer received. He ran the investment advisory as a secretive business, however.

Dan Horwitz, counsel of Mr. Madoff, in an interview, said that “he is a longstanding leader in the financial-services industry with an unblemished record; he is a person of integrity; he intends to fight to get through this unfortunate event.” Mr. Madoff was released on his own recognizance on the same day of his arrest, after his 2 sons turned him in, and posting $10 million bail secured by his Manhattan apartment. Without entering any plea, the Court set the preliminary hearing for January 12.

Madoff’s hedge fund scheme may rank among the biggest fraud in history. When former energy trading giant Enron filed for bankruptcy in 2001, one of the largest at the time, it had $63.4 billion in assets. The scheme would dwarf past Ponzis, and it would further be nearly five times the telecommunication company WorldCom fraud and bankruptcy proceedings in 2002.

The Securities and Exchange Commission filed a separate civil suit on Thursday against Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities and its eponymous founder Mr. Madoff. It was docketed as “U.S. v. Madoff,” 08-MAG-02735, by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (Manhattan). SEC, New York associate director of enforcement, Andrew M. Calamari, asked the judge to issue seizure orders on the firm and its assets, and appoint a receiver. The SEC pleads, among others, that “it was an ongoing $50 billion swindle; our complaint alleges a stunning fraud that appears to be of epic proportions.” It further accused the defendant of “paying returns to certain investors out of the principal received from other, different investors” for years. Madoff’s hedge fund business had previously claimed to have served between 11 and 25 clients and had $17.1 billion in assets under management. But virtually all of the assets were missing.

United States District Court for the Southern District of New York Louis L. Stanton on Thursday appointed Lee Richards, a Manhattan lawyer, as the firm’s receiver. A hearing is set for Friday, for a ruling on the SEC’s petition to grant plenary powers to the receiver over the entire firm, and an absolute asset sequestration.

Doug Kass, president of hedge fund Seabreeze Partners Management said that “this is a major blow to confidence that is already shattered — anyone on the fence will probably try to take their money out.”

All About Plastic Surgery

by

Gen WrightEach year millions of men and women look into getting cosmetic or plastic surgery done to some part of their bodies. It has become a common choice for people who are unsatisfied with their bodies and need a way to feel better and more confident once and for all. If you are one of these people and feel like plastic surgery is something that could be a positive aspect in your life, then you will want to know as much about it as possible, along with what you want done. Before you step foot in a doctor’s office, you will want to have a specific idea of what you want done and have your mind made up. Often times plastic surgeons will try to change your mind or convince you to have certain work done that is more expensive than what you already had in mind. Stay strong and confident in what you want and don’t let anyone else convince you otherwise, even if it’s a doctor.

A good plastic surgeon will go over all the details of the procedure with you, so you are not confused about any detail whatsoever. It is very important to get a doctor who is certified and can legally perform these procedures. Even though it seems like an obvious thing to check for, it is still something critical when looking in to getting cosmetic surgery done. One of the most common things that men have done is removal or acne or scars. Scars that are caused by long term acne are very commonly removed through plastic surgery. Doctors are able to take skin tissue from other places on your body and cover over the scars, so they are no longer visible. If you have a scar somewhere on your body that you would rather not like to have anymore, then you may want to consider getting work done on it.

For women, breast augmentation or enlargement is also a very common procedure, and it can be great for boosting self-esteem. Before you get a procedure like this done however, you will want to look into how much it will cost. It will not be cheap, so you should be prepared to have the full amount before looking into it seriously. A plastic surgeon will be able to tell you specifically how much they charge, but you should also have a ball park figure so you know whether or not they are charging too much. Women also commonly get scars removed as well as acne that can be very destructive to your skin and self-esteem. If you want cosmetic surgery done, then you first need to gather all the facts and details before going ahead with it.

Getting a

macrolane

injection could be just what you need to get the kind of look you want with your breasts. Getting

plastic surgery

is a good idea for anyone who wants to become more comfortable with their body overall.

Hearing testimony; U.S. soldiers took turns raping 14 year old Iraqi girl before killing her

Hearing testimony; U.S. soldiers took turns raping 14 year old Iraqi girl before killing her

Wednesday, August 9, 2006

In testimony given before a U.S. military hearing, criminal investigator Benjamin Bierce narrated his account of how an incident involving five soldiers involved the serial rape of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl prior to shooting her. The hearing will determine whether four current U.S. soldiers have to face a court martial hearing; an additional former soldier allegedly involved in the incident, Steven D. Green, was recently discharged from the military and has pleaded not guilty to rape and murder charges in federal court in Kentucky.

According to Bierce, a U.S. Special Agent investigating the incident, the brutal attack which saw Abeer Qassim al-Janabi slain and her parents and younger sister murdered was premeditated. Citing a sworn statement from Army Specialist James Barker, the five accused were said to have plotted the rape whilst drinking whisky and playing cards.According to Agent Bierce, Spc. Barker said that Pte. Spielman grabbed the girl while Pte. Green seized her father and they then took them into the house and Sgt. Cortez and Spc. Barker followed them inside.

Pte. Green supposedly led the father, mother and younger sister into the bedroom and closed the door, while the teenage girl remained in the living room with the other Americans, Spc. Barker’s statement said.

Sgt. Cortez then allegedly pushed the girl to the floor, pulled up her dress and tore off her underwear while she was struggling, Bierce said, again citing Spc. Barker’s statement. Sgt. Cortez appeared to then rape Abeer and afterward, Spc. Barker tried to rape the girl, the statement said.

Then Pte. Green came out of the bedroom with an AK-47 rifle and announced: “They’re all dead. I just killed them,” according to Spc. Barker’s statement.

Then Sgt. Cortez held Abeer down while Pte. Green raped the girl; according to Spc. Barker’s statement. Pte. Green then picked up the AK-47 and shot Abeer once, waited, and then shot her a few more times, the U.S. official, Agent Bierce, said, quoting from Spc. Barker’s statement.

Spc. Barker said that he then poured kerosene lamp fuel on the girl’s body but Barker did not say who set it on fire.

Gary Griesmyer, another Special Agent, quoted Sgt. Cortez as telling him that the teenage girl was crying and talking in Arabic and that Spc. Barker told her to “shut up.”

Private Justin Watt testified that Pte. Howard told him before the incident that Pte. Green, Sgt. Cortez and Spc. Barker were planning to rape a girl, and Pte. Howard was going to be the lookout.

Watt testified that he heard Mr. Green say, “I want to kill and hurt a lot of Iraqis.” Green has been discharged from the military and has pleaded not guilty in a federal court in Kentucky where he will stand trial; he will not be facing a court martial regardless of what occurrs in the Baghdad hearing.

“If you have the power to make something right, you should do it. Investigation is not my job. But if something went down — something terrible like that — then it’s my obligation to come forward,” Watt said.

Watt also said life for some of the soldiers in the B Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, was horrible while they were manning a military post in nearby Yusufiyah. Some lived in a “dilapidated, abandoned water treatment facility” he said.

Pfc. Watt, who is identified as the whistle-blowing soldier who disclosed the attack during a counseling session, also said; “I feared for my safety at the TCP (traffic control point). It’s like this, I find out that guys in my squad, guys I trusted with my life, are allegedly responsible for one of the most brutal rapes/murders I’ve ever seen. And everyone has a weapon and grenades.”

Pfc. Justin Cross testified that deadly attacks by insurgents sapped morale and raised combat stress in the U.S. Army unit that included the soldiers accused of raping and murdering Abeer. He said that the “mentally draining” living conditions of the combat unit was a factor.

“It drives you nuts. You feel like every step you might get blown up. You just hit a point where you’re like, ‘If I die today, I die.’ You’re just walking a death walk.” Pfc. Cross told the hearing.

An article 32 hearing, like this, seeks to determine if a soldiers should face court martial. Its similar to that of a preliminary hearing or a grand jury proceeding in civilian law.
