Three Things To Avoid In A College Interview

By Joan Bremen

Let’s fact it – colleges are swamped with applications of potential students. Colleges need a system in place that will enable them to quickly gauge which applicants have a better likelihood of completing their studies and succeeding in college.

The college interview is a way for the college to get to know the applicant a little bit better on a one on one basis. It is not meant to intimidate potential students, but rather its objective is to evaluate the motivation and potential of the person behind the application.

The college interview is a basically conversation with a professional trying to get an idea who you are, where you are coming from, and where you are heading.

It is important to avoid the following common pitfalls in your upcoming college interview:

1. Coming Off Sounding Unnatural

One of the most important things you need to ensure is to sound genuine and real.

If an interviewer feels that you are just reciting a well prepared script you might lose important points.

Sounding natural has to do both with form and with substance. The tone of your voice, and the way you speak can be as important as what you actually say. The tone of your voice should make the interviewer feel that he is talking to a real person with a genuine personality. Don’t sound monotonous. Be engaged in the conversation and don’t make an impression you are merely waiting to get it over with.

What you have to say is also very important. In this respect – preparation is the key. Go over your resume and the details of your past experiences. Be ready for questions that on the surface seem simple but need a lot of honing, such as ‘tell me about yourself’, ‘what are you passionate about’, ‘who or what inspires you’, ‘why do you want to study this major’, ‘what will you do if you are not accepted here’, ‘how do you see yourself in five years, etc. Prepare for questions about your past, your past studies, your hobbies, your social activities, volunteer work. Recheck your aspirations, motivations and interests. Read a lot about the college you are being interviewed at. Go to the college website. Read about the college history, facilities, course curriculum. Ask yourself – why do you want to get into that particular college.

2. Providing Yes/ No and Short Answers

We all know this feeling – trying to get to the finish line with the least amount of errors.

Sometimes this caution leads applicants to answer questions very briefly.

Simple yes /no answers will not pass muster. Remember – the interviewer’s job is to find out whether it is in the best interest of the college to prefer you upon other applicants into their program.

Let’s say the interviewer refers to your past experience of volunteering at a homeless shelter, mentioned on your resume. The question presented to you can be very simple – did you like volunteering at the homeless shelter. An answer ‘yes – I liked it very much’ is meaningless. This is a missed opportunity to stand out and show your true colors. A much better lasting impression can be created if you answer something along the following lines. ‘Yes – the work in the animal shelter was an important experience. In the two years at the shelter I learned about the importance of compassion, giving back to the community, assuming responsibilities and working with other people.’

But I can’t emphasize enough – don’t overdo it. Don’t turn the interview into a tedious monologue!

3. Appearance and Etiquette Mistakes

As the saying goes ‘you never have a second chance to make a first impression’. You want to make a good impression on the interviewer and you do want the interviewer to like you. This has to do with the way you dress and the way you handle your self. Don’t wear that pair of jeans that makes you look cool. The best bet for a college interview dress code is business casual, both for men and for women. Rest before the interview – you don’t want to sound or appear tired in the interview. Don’t come to the interview over perfumed. Don’t chew gum. Say hello, be polite, and introduce anyone that you bring along, including parents, your brother or sister or a good friend. Let the interviewer lead the way and don’t cut the interviewer off – let them finish a sentence before reacting. Speak clearly, slowly but naturally. Refer to the interviewer by name. Ask questions, not questions about things that can be easily found on the college website but questions that demonstrate a true interest in the college, the course curriculum and its facilities. Smile when it is appropriate. At the end of the interview thank the interviewer. It is also a good idea to send a short thank you note.

If you follow these simple guidelines – you will increase your chances of successfully passing your college interview.

Tax evasion investigators raid Google’s Paris headquarters

Tax evasion investigators raid Google’s Paris headquarters

Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Dozens of tax investigators raided Google’s offices in French capital Paris yesterday as part of a probe into the company’s alleged tax evasion.

The raid was conducted by investigators from the state financial prosecutor’s office assisted by 25 information technology (IT) experts, according to officials. “The investigation aims to verify whether Google Ireland Ltd has a permanent base in France” the prosecutor’s office said, “and if, by not declaring parts of its activities carried out in France, it failed its fiscal obligations[…]”.

Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., reports most of its sales in Ireland. Google claims most sales contracts are closed in its Dublin offices. If investigation finds sales are being concluded in other countries, Google may need to pay additional taxes in these countries.

In 2014 Google reported a total yearly revenue in France of €225.4 million with a profit of just €12.2 million, paying only €5 million in corporate tax according to the Financial Times. A Google spokesperson said the company is co-operating with French authorities and fully complies with French law.

According to Reuters, a source from the French finance ministry said French tax authorities are also separately pursuing Google for €1.6 billion in back taxes.

Three killed, three others injured in stabbing attack in Reading, UK

Tuesday, June 23, 2020

On Saturday evening in Forbury Gardens in Reading, Berkshire, UK shortly before 19:00 local time (1800 UTC), a mass stabbing killed three people and injured three others. A 25-year-old man was arrested by Thames Valley Police on suspicion of murder. Reports named him on Sunday as Reading resident and Libyan national Khairi Saadallah. Police also announced on Sunday morning they were treating it as a terrorist incident.

The Daily Telegraph cited a security source that mental health may be a factor in the attack. Witnesses, according to The Telegraph, said a man approached and attacked a group of middle-aged men, using a knife. Thames Valley Police soon arrived and detained the man, later identified as Khairi Saadallah. Saadallah came to the UK a number of years ago, after the Libyan Civil War. A counter terror police raid removed various items from Saadallah’s flat, amongst them reportedly a circular saw.

The head of the UK’s counter terror police, Neil Basu, on Sunday said the police found nothing inconsistent with the attacker acting alone. He also said there is no suggestion of specific increased threat towards people in crowded places from terrorists. A Black Lives Matter protest had taken place in Forbury Gardens a few hours before the attack, but Basu also stated this was not connected to the crime.

US Senator Ted Kennedy collapses during inaugural luncheon
 Correction — January 23, 2009

On Tuesday afternoon, Robert Byrd’s office corrected the reports used for this article. Mark Ferrell said, “Sen. Byrd did not have a medical issue – he is just fine.”

 • Associated Press. “Aide: Byrd left Hill lunch when Kennedy stricken” — Washington Post, January 20, 2009

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

According to reports, two United States Senators, Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd, suffered medical problems during a luncheon with new U.S. President Barack Obama.

Kennedy collapsed as a result of a seizure and was taken away by paramedics in a wheelchair. In May, Kennedy was diagnosed with brain cancer, which required an operation. Kennedy is at Washington Hospital in Washington, D.C. where his family says he is awake and talking. At the time of his collapse, he was reported to be sitting with John Kerry, another Massachusetts Senator, 2004 presidential candidate, and close friend of Kennedy.

President Obama commented on the situation during the luncheon: “And so I would be lying to you if I did not say that right now a part of me is with him, and I think that’s true for all of us. This is a joyous time. But it’s also a sobering time. And my prayers are with him and his family and Vicki [Kennedy’s wife].”

U.S. Senator Byrd was also taken out of the luncheon after he had reported that he had trouble eating. Byrd, 91 is the oldest member of the U.S. Senate and the longest-serving Senator in the history of the body. Reports indicate that Byrd is doing well.

Puppies used to smuggle heroin

">
Puppies used to smuggle heroin

Thursday, February 2, 2006

Ten puppies with bags of liquid heroin surgically implanted into their bellies were having seizures in a drug bust in Medellin, Colombia, said authorities.

“They utilized a wide range of smuggling, the most repulsive of which was the use of puppies,” said John P. Gilbride, head of the DEA’s New York office.

“There have been cases of animal cruelty that have led to the discovery of drug labs, but not to the extent of an animal being used to carry drugs, especially a puppy,” said ASPCA spokeswoman Jo Sullivan.

Investigators believe that the dogs were used to smuggle heroin into New York on commercial flights. The drugs were then to be distributed and sold along the East Coast.

“Ten puppies, including Labrador retrievers, were rescued during a 2005 raid on a farm in Colombia,” said the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) on Wednesday. The Agency also announced that they had made more than 30 arrests.

Authorities believe that a veterinarian, Andres Lopez Elorez (who is also believed to be a fugitive in Spain), opened the bellies of at least six of the ten puppies, inserted 500 mL bags of liquid heroin, and then stitched them back up. Three puppies had died due to infections after the drugs were removed. A total of 3 kg of heroin were recovered from six puppies. The bags were found using ultrasound.

“The surviving dogs are still alive and well, we’re told,” said Gilbride. “I think it’s outrageous and heinous that they’d use small, innocent puppies in this way. This investigation identified the individuals who were responsible for overseeing and smuggling millions of dollars worth of heroin from Colombia to the East Coast.”

The investigation revealed that the smugglers, whose ring was based in Medellin, not only used people and puppies to conceal their drugs, but also body creams, aerosol cans, and the linings of purses and luggage.

A tipster is said to have led authorities to the puppies.

It is not known how many puppies were actually used in the smuggling operation.

Three dogs were adopted by Colombian police. At least one of those puppies will be trained to sniff for drugs.

About 24 kilograms of heroin was seized in recent raids in Colombia which have resulted in more than 20 arrests and another ten in custody in New York. A total of at least 24 kilograms have been seized in these raids.

Australian government announces $52.5 million financial assistance package for Ford

Australian government announces $52.5 million financial assistance package for Ford

Friday, May 5, 2006

Australian Prime Minister John Howard and federal industry minister Ian MacDonald today announced that the federal government would be providing Ford Australia with a AU$52.5 million (US$40.4 million) “financial assistance package”. Additional assistance will also be provided by the Victorian state government.

According to Mr Howard, the injection will secure Ford’s manufacturing operations in Australia “for the long term”.

From the package, AU$40 million will be used for the design and manufacture of Ford’s next model Falcon and Territory vehicles, which will be built in Australia.

Despite being given a major facelift in 2002 and another in 2005, the Falcon’s bodyshell dates back to 1998. The current Falcon will need to serve the company until at least 2007 when the new model is anticipated. In the meantime, it will face stiff competition from the completely new Holden Commodore (the Falcon’s major competitor) which will be released in the second half of this year.

The additional AU$12.5 million will be spent on the development of a light commercial vehicle platform, which will be built overseas and marketed to around 80 countries. Mr Howard said that the light commercial project would involve construction of a research and development centre, which will become the base for R&D projects in the region.

Mr MacFarlane said that the research facility was exciting for Australia and that it would put the Australian automotive in the spotlight.

“The funding has helped Ford Australia secure the largest automotive R&D project ever undertaken in Australia which is equally exciting news for local Ford employees and Australian component producers” he said.

“The project will see Ford Australia become a centre for automotive design and engineering excellence in the Asia Pacific region which will bring spin-off benefits for the broader industry,”

“This opportunity will put both Ford Australia, and the Australian automotive and components sectors on the world map as far as our automotive design and engineering capabilities are concerned.” Mr MacFarlane said.

Mr Howard claims that the projects will create 273 jobs and secure the future of the “iconic” Ford Falcon, which has been built in Australia since 1960.

The financial package is conditional upon Ford Australia giving the Australian automotive component industry an opportunity to supply components for the vehicles produced by the two projects.

Stacker Trucks Add More Efficiency In Your Workplace

Stacker Trucks Add More Efficiency in Your Workplace

by

I. Gates

Majority of the small companies are trying to switch over themselves into big industries where huge tasks are performed with convenience and efficiency. These are two sides of a coin. The efficiency of a process ensures convenience and convenience in doing something ensures efficiency. This policy is strictly followed at manufacturing sites and construction sites. The concrete demonstration of this abstract policy is provided by stacker trucks. These are essential material-handling equipments which are used in industries of heavy duty activities. Stacker trucks help in easy loading and transportation of goods. They are of great use in many of the industrial and commercial sites and are now widely used in refineries, shipyards and even in warehouses. Stacker trucks eliminate all stress and strain associated with manual loading and transporting of heavy materials. Chances of work-related injuries are also high while using manual effort for transporting goods. By introducing stacker trucks into your workplace, you can abolish all these risk factors.

Manual and electric are two basic types of stacker trucks. Counter balance stacker, semi-electric stacker, ergonomics stacker and pallet stacker are several other types. Among these types, the percentage of the use of electric stacker is higher. Most of electric stacker trucks come with adjustable divergence and support system. Electric pallet stacker trucks are mostly useful for pile and move, load and unload in chemical engineering, military engineering, petroleum, pharmacy, painting, railroad, light textile, bridge back, warehouse etc.

Lift trucks are one of the functional types of stacker trucks. An outcome of international advanced design technology, it ensures more convenient and efficient operation. They are light and flexible, fitted with efficient hydraulics. Among lift trucks, four wheels forklifts are meant for automatic transmission with high productivity and efficiency. High stability, low energy consumption, maximum visibility and minimum noise are among the host of features that these lift trucks. The high working efficiency of these special stacker trucks rests on their wide-version designs. The battery-powered forklift is another type of stacker truck. It is easy to charge and operated as well.

Cleveland, Ohio clinic performs US’s first face transplant

Cleveland, Ohio clinic performs US’s first face transplant

Thursday, December 18, 2008

A team of eight transplant surgeons in Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, led by reconstructive surgeon Dr. Maria Siemionow, age 58, have successfully performed the first almost total face transplant in the US, and the fourth globally, on a woman so horribly disfigured due to trauma, that cost her an eye. Two weeks ago Dr. Siemionow, in a 23-hour marathon surgery, replaced 80 percent of her face, by transplanting or grafting bone, nerve, blood vessels, muscles and skin harvested from a female donor’s cadaver.

The Clinic surgeons, in Wednesday’s news conference, described the details of the transplant but upon request, the team did not publish her name, age and cause of injury nor the donor’s identity. The patient’s family desired the reason for her transplant to remain confidential. The Los Angeles Times reported that the patient “had no upper jaw, nose, cheeks or lower eyelids and was unable to eat, talk, smile, smell or breathe on her own.” The clinic’s dermatology and plastic surgery chair, Francis Papay, described the nine hours phase of the procedure: “We transferred the skin, all the facial muscles in the upper face and mid-face, the upper lip, all of the nose, most of the sinuses around the nose, the upper jaw including the teeth, the facial nerve.” Thereafter, another team spent three hours sewing the woman’s blood vessels to that of the donor’s face to restore blood circulation, making the graft a success.

The New York Times reported that “three partial face transplants have been performed since 2005, two in France and one in China, all using facial tissue from a dead donor with permission from their families.” “Only the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip, lower teeth and jaw are hers, the rest of her face comes from a cadaver; she could not eat on her own or breathe without a hole in her windpipe. About 77 square inches of tissue were transplanted from the donor,” it further described the details of the medical marvel. The patient, however, must take lifetime immunosuppressive drugs, also called antirejection drugs, which do not guarantee success. The transplant team said that in case of failure, it would replace the part with a skin graft taken from her own body.

Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital surgeon praised the recent medical development. “There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Leading bioethicist Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania withheld judgment on the Cleveland transplant amid grave concerns on the post-operation results. “The biggest ethical problem is dealing with failure — if your face rejects. It would be a living hell. If your face is falling off and you can’t eat and you can’t breathe and you’re suffering in a terrible manner that can’t be reversed, you need to put on the table assistance in dying. There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Dr Alex Clarke, of the Royal Free Hospital had praised the Clinic for its contribution to medicine. “It is a real step forward for people who have severe disfigurement and this operation has been done by a team who have really prepared and worked towards this for a number of years. These transplants have proven that the technical difficulties can be overcome and psychologically the patients are doing well. They have all have reacted positively and have begun to do things they were not able to before. All the things people thought were barriers to this kind of operations have been overcome,” she said.

The first partial face transplant surgery on a living human was performed on Isabelle Dinoire on November 27 2005, when she was 38, by Professor Bernard Devauchelle, assisted by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard in Amiens, France. Her Labrador dog mauled her in May 2005. A triangle of face tissue including the nose and mouth was taken from a brain-dead female donor and grafted onto the patient. Scientists elsewhere have performed scalp and ear transplants. However, the claim is the first for a mouth and nose transplant. Experts say the mouth and nose are the most difficult parts of the face to transplant.

In 2004, the same Cleveland Clinic, became the first institution to approve this surgery and test it on cadavers. In October 2006, surgeon Peter Butler at London‘s Royal Free Hospital in the UK was given permission by the NHS ethics board to carry out a full face transplant. His team will select four adult patients (children cannot be selected due to concerns over consent), with operations being carried out at six month intervals. In March 2008, the treatment of 30-year-old neurofibromatosis victim Pascal Coler of France ended after having received what his doctors call the worlds first successful full face transplant.

Ethical concerns, psychological impact, problems relating to immunosuppression and consequences of technical failure have prevented teams from performing face transplant operations in the past, even though it has been technically possible to carry out such procedures for years.

Mr Iain Hutchison, of Barts and the London Hospital, warned of several problems with face transplants, such as blood vessels in the donated tissue clotting and immunosuppressants failing or increasing the patient’s risk of cancer. He also pointed out ethical issues with the fact that the procedure requires a “beating heart donor”. The transplant is carried out while the donor is brain dead, but still alive by use of a ventilator.

According to Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society’s ethics committee, it is unknown to what extent facial expressions will function in the long term. He said that it is not certain whether a patient could be left worse off in the case of a face transplant failing.

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon‘s facial transplantation working party, commented that if successful, the transplant would be “a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction” and “a major step forward for the facially disfigured.”

In Wednesday’s conference, Siemionow said “we know that there are so many patients there in their homes where they are hiding from society because they are afraid to walk to the grocery stores, they are afraid to go the the street.” “Our patient was called names and was humiliated. We very much hope that for this very special group of patients there is a hope that someday they will be able to go comfortably from their houses and enjoy the things we take for granted,” she added.

In response to the medical breakthrough, a British medical group led by Royal Free Hospital’s lead surgeon Dr Peter Butler, said they will finish the world’s first full face transplant within a year. “We hope to make an announcement about a full-face operation in the next 12 months. This latest operation shows how facial transplantation can help a particular group of the most severely facially injured people. These are people who would otherwise live a terrible twilight life, shut away from public gaze,” he said.
