Glasgow cannabis enthusiasts celebrate ‘green’ on city green

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Coinciding with Easter Sunday, Glasgow Cannabis Social Club’s annual 420 event was held on Glasgow Green, under sunny blue skies, and overlooking the river Clyde. Despite the city’s council attempting to revoke permission for the gathering at the last minute, police were happy for it to go-ahead with approximately a dozen officers attending in high-visibility vests.

The Daily Record reported five arrests were made for minor offences, likely smoking and possession of small quantities of cannabis. Taking a less-sensational — and more accurate — line of reporting, the Monday edition of Glasgow’s Evening News stated five were referred to the Procurator Fiscal who is responsible for deciding if charges should be brought.

Official figures provided by the police were that 150 attended. With people coming and going, Wikinews reporters estimated upwards of 200 attended, compared to nearly 700 who had signed up for the event on Facebook. Hemp goods were advertised and on sale at the event, and some attendees were seen drinking cannabis-themed energy drinks.

“I was searched and charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act (which is a lot of bollocks)” one attendee noted online, adding “not fair to happen on a brilliant day like it was, other than that I had a great day!” A second said they were openly smoking and ignored by police, who “were only really focusing on people who looked particularly young”.

Cannabis seeds were openly and legally sold at the event and a hydroponics supplier brought a motortrike towing an advertising trailer. Actually growing cannabis is, however, illegal in the UK.

With the event openly advocating the legalisation of cannabis, speakers put their arguments for this to a receptive crowd. Retired police officer James Duffy, of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, spoke of the failed United States alcohol prohibition policy; stressing such policies needlessly bring people into contact with criminal elements. Highlighting other countries where legalisation has been implemented, he pointed out such led to lower crime, and lower drug use overall.

One speaker, who produced a bottle of cannabis oil he had received through the post, asserted this cured his prostate cancer. Others highlighted the current use of Sativex by the National Health Service, with a cost in-excess of £150 for a single bottle of GW Pharmaceuticals patented spray — as-compared to the oil shown to the crowd, with a manufacturing cost of approximately £10.

Similar ‘420’ pro-cannabis events were held globally.

Gps Tracking Watches At Work}

Submitted by: Joe Mueller

GPS technology is infiltrating almost every single gadget we own. Cell phones, cars, watches, shoes, and even our pets are coming under the ever watchful eye of GPS. Since this is happening it is a good idea to take a look at the way that GPS works.

GPS systems work around the basic principle called trilateration. Trilateration uses the known location of a transmitting device and the distances between these devices and the person using their GPS device to calculate the exact position of the receiver. This is very much like the more widely know triangulation, except that trilateration does not use angles at all in its calculations.

To better understand how this works imagine that you are standing at a some point in the middle of nowhere. You have no idea how you got there and all you have with you are the clothes on your back, enough food and water to travel for one day, and a GPS device. You wake up wondering where you are and you look at your GPS tracking watch and read that you are at a certain latitude and longitude at 10 feet above sea level. How does you GPS know so much more information than you?

Well, traveling 12,600 miles (20,200 km) above you is a system of 24 satellites maintained by the US government that are constantly transmitting microwave signals at the speed of light. These transmissions contain information read by that watch on your wrist – information used to accurately calculate your position on the surface of the earth. The basic information contained in these messages is the time at which the signal was initiated by the satellite and the satellites position. The distance between the receiver and the satellite is then calculated by multiplying the speed of the signal by the time is took to get to the receiver.

So your GPS device has invisible, silently, and quickly calculated your position, but what is that going to do for you in the hypothetical situation outlined above? Well, if your GPS device is simply a data logger (the simplest and most widespread GPS application) then you are still just as hopelessly lost as you where when you woke up. With no map you could head out in the wrong direct and end up dying a painful, horrible death alone in the wilderness – yuck.

But if you had a data pushing GPS device you can sit back and relax because you know that your device not only knows exactly where it is in the world, but it also is transmitting that information to a central database for the good guys (family, friends, or authorities) to see. They will know where you are to within 500 feet. The is pretty close. With a data pushing GPS device you can find some shade and rest in mother nature until the rescue team arrives. In our hypothetical situation you want a this type of GPS device.

It is important to note that each type of GPS device has its own application and use. For most people in most situations a data logger will do just fine. It tracks where you have been and has applications in hiking, biking, and running. But for situations where someone else would benefit from knowing your location – in tracking down a stolen vehicle, knowing the whereabouts of a child, or finding a lost hiker – than you definitely want to invest in a data pushing GPS device.

Sunnis withdraw from Iraqi government

Sunnis withdraw from Iraqi government

Wednesday, August 1, 2007

The Sunni half of the Iraqi government, also known as the Sunni Accordance Front, is withdrawing from the Iraqi government. Reports are also saying that Iraqi’s Deputy Prime Minister, Salam al-Zaubai, will resign after more than 70 people were killed in suicide bombings in Baghdad.

According to reports, the Front is withdrawing from the government because Iraq’s Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki, has not responded to at least a dozen demands made by the Front. They include having more of a “say” in the security and protection of Iraq, and call for the release of prisoners who are not being charged with crimes.

“The government is continuing with its arrogance, refusing to change its stand and has slammed shut the door to any meaningful reforms necessary for saving Iraq. We had hoped that the government would respond to these demands or at least acknowledge the failure of its policies, which led Iraq to a level of misery it had not seen in modern history. But its stand did not surprise us at all,” said one of the leaders of the front, Rafaa al-Issawi, to reporters during a press conference.

The Iraqi government released a statement denying the Fronts claims, stating “our goal has been always the continuation of the active political participation and that everybody shoulders his [Maliki] responsibility in running the country and making the decisions. We will maintain contacts with all blocs, including the Accordance Front.”

The Front is made up of 44 members, all of whom held a seat in the parliament of Iraq which totaled 275.

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

Two-and-a-half tonnes of marijuana destroyed in Afghan school

Two-and-a-half tonnes of marijuana destroyed in Afghan school

Sunday, December 21, 2008

The combined efforts of agents from the Afghan Commandos and Coalition forces have led to the discovery and destruction of two-and-a-half tonnes of marijuana in an abandoned school in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar on Friday.

Kandah?r province or Qandahar (??????,{??????) is one of the largest of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan. It is located in southern Afghanistan, between Helamand, Oruzgan and Zabul provinces. Its capital is the city of Kandah?r, also spelled Qandah?r, (?????? or ??????), the second largest city in Afghanistan, with a population of 450,300 (2006 estimate). Kandahar City is located on the Arghandab River. The province has a population of nearly 890,000, with more than 300,000 living in its capital city. The main inhabitants of Kandahar province are the Pashtun people.

An improvised explosive device and an unexploded mortar round, both 100-meters away from the school, also were destroyed.Foot patrol by the combined forces yielded tips which led to the drug discovery. A Commando also discovered a large room filled with marijuana seeds. The marijuana was placed in two-foot-tall (0.6-meter) stacks that filled multiple 12ft-by-12ft rooms. Rust on the furniture suggests the Afghan schoolhouse may not have been used as such for a long period of time. No students or faculty were around at the time of the drug bust.

U.S. Forces Afghanistan spokesperson, Col. Jerry O’Hara said that “using drugs to fund insurgent activity is bad enough; using a school as a drug warehouse is an attack on the future of all Afghanistan.”

Xinhua has reported that “according to a recent U.N. report, Afghanistan produces over 90 percent of the world’s opium as Taliban militants will benefit nearly 500 million U.S. dollars from opium trade in 2008.”

Meanwhile, coalition troops have killed four militants in Zabul Province. They also detained five suspects on Saturday. Adm. Mike Mullen, chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that “the United States would send between 20,000 and 30,000 more forces to Afghanistan by summer.” “Those forces will primarily move into the country’s south, where the insurgency is the most entrenched,” he added.

Tips In Handling Hyperactive Children

Get More Information Here:

By Melody N. Andes

Hyperactive children needs lots of patience, understanding and love from parents and care givers because of their different behavior and special needs. At present, there are numerous attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children who need all the understanding and patience because they are different as compared to normal children. Some mothers blame themselves for having ADHD children because they thought that ADHD has something to do with the medicines they took when they were conceiving them.

Despite their abnormalities, they need patience, love and understanding not only from their parents, but also to the people around them. This article offers tips and suggestions on who to take care with hyperactive children.

What is ADHD?

It is a behavioral disorder characterized by impulsiveness, restlessness, hyperactivity and inattention to things. Other signs of ADHD include frequent chattering, inability to concentrate for specific tasks, fidgety and talkative.

Most often, ADHD children have endless energy, thereby making it hard for them to remain constant and to focus on specific tasks. According to studies, these situations are aggravated by too much intake of sugar and caffeine, thus doctors advised parents to regulate the diet of their children and to avoid giving them candies, sodas and chocolates.

Researchers also found that watching television (TV) shortens their attention span, thus doctors suggested that parents monitor their activities and the television programs they are watching. It is best to limit TV time by once or twice daily and hyperactive children should learn and discover things on leisure pace.

Parents should not be worried if their child is hyperactive because it is not a fatal disease to cause redress and alarm. What they should do is to follow special measures to deal with the situation because they have special needs and their behaviors are different compared to normal children. Regardless the causes of their hyperactivity, they need to channel their energies to suitable avenues which could be beneficial to them. You could enroll them in sports or share some household task with them to engage them in mental and physical activities for their benefit.

To deal with ADHD children, you can follow the suggestions below:

1. Avoid giving them chocolates, salty foods and sweets to avoid boosting their hyperactivity. You can give them healthy and nutritious substitutes like fruits and green vegetables.

2. Avoid giving them foods containing red dye#40 because it increases their hyperactivity. Be sure to read product labels when buying food items and beverages to ensure that the products you bought are free from red dye#40.

3. Be sure to support and guide them in their activities and tasks. When they completed their tasks successfully, give them rewards to motivate them in doing more tasks. Give minor penalties or punishment for misbehavior, but be sure to explain to them properly why they are being punished.

4. Never hinder them from exploring their potentials. If your child is good in drawing or painting, then enroll him in an art school for the gifted children to improve his talent.

5. Show them that you care and love them.

6. Avoid yelling or screaming at him when they start to tantrum. Talk to them in nice and mellow voice to calm him down.

7. Lastly, be a role model to them.

Hollywood sign modified to read ‘Hollyweed’

Hollywood sign modified to read ‘Hollyweed’
Correction — January 22, 2016 The vote on November 9 was of California voters, not the California legislature.

Tuesday, January 3, 2017

The Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, California was modified to read “Hollyweed” on Sunday. Security camera footage shows the perpetrator was dressed all in black, said Sergeant Robert Payan.

Christopher Garcia, a spokesperson of the Los Angeles Police Department, said the suspected male offender is being investigated for trespassing rather than vandalism. The sign was not physically damaged; the modification was done using black tarpaulins decorated with signs of peace and heart to alter the “O” to read lowercase “e”.

Betsy Isroelit, a Hollywood Sign Trust spokesperson said, “There was obviously recent legislation in California that may have inspired people. But to me, it looks more like a New Year’s Eve prank.” On November 9, legislators voted in favor of a ballot for legalising recreational use of marijuana in California for the age group of 21 and above.

Previously, on January 1, 1976, Daniel Finegood had vandalised the sign using curtains in a similar manner to read “Hollyweed”. As a college student, Finegood had modified the sign for an assignment in art class. Finegood, in 1990, had modified the sign again, signifying a political issue, modifying the sign to read “Oil War” to protest the Persian Gulf War.

The sign was vandalised in 1992 before the US presidential election. Supporters of presidential election candidate Ross Perot altered the sign to read “Perotwood”.

The law legalising recreational marijuana is due to come into effect in 2018.

Mudslides kill at least thirteen in Italy

Mudslides kill at least thirteen in Italy

Friday, October 2, 2009

At least thirteen people have been killed after torrential rains caused mudslides in Italy on Friday.

The mudslides occurred in the city of Messina, located in the northern part of Sicily. The mud blocked rails and road, cut off communications, and destroyed several buildings.

Search and rescue teams were using dogs to locate survivors buried beneath the rubble. Around forty people were hospitalised.

“Most of the dead and seriously injured were in two buildings that collapsed in mudslides,” emergency services spokesman Giampiero Gliubizzi told the Agence France-Presse news agency.

Over one hundred people were forced to evacuate when mudslides threatened their homes, officials said. Some escaped onto roofs, where they were airlifted by helicopters.

“I didn’t understand what was happening. I was at home and everything started moving. Then I found myself surrounded by rubble,” said a survivor. Witness reports suggest the depth of the mud reached seven metres (23 feet) in some areas.
