New Jersey officials: Stimulus bill hurting Atlantic City casinos

A New Jersey congressman says restrictions on federal stimulus money are hurting gaming destinations like Atlantic City, and he is seeking to repeal a provision banning the use of funds for casinos or other gaming establishments.

Is Ken Calemmo right to suggest that the gaming industry is as important as manufacturing, retail or finance?

“The demonization of gaming destinations such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City for business travel is wrong, wrong, wrong,” U.S. Rep Frank LoBiondo said Friday during a press conference in front of Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The $787 billion federal stimulus bill passed in February specifically prohibits casinos from applying for funds for infrastructure improvements and other similar projects. LoBiondo said Atlantic City is losing millions of dollars in business as a result of that provision.

Casinos’ revenues dropped 19.2 percent in February 2009 month compared to February 2008, according to the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. LoBiondo said $160 million worth of business and 120,000 visitors have chosen other cities for their tourism plans due to the stimulus bill, according to Atlantic City Convention Center figures.

The administration also recently determined other groups like nonprofit organizations and local governments may not spend their stimulus money at casino properties. State officials said the rules are damaging a major pillar of the New Jersey economy.

“Are those jobs somehow less important or less meaningful than those in the manufacturing, retail or financial industries?” said Ken Calemmo, chairman-elect of the Greater Atlantic City Chamber.

Anti-gambling officials said the stimulus law does not prohibit casinos from taking advantage of tax breaks, and Atlantic City officials should not complain about the stimulus bill because the city is too reliant on an unreliable revenue stream.

“There isn’t a state, including New Jersey or Nevada, that could gamble themselves rich, any more than an individual could gamble themselves rich,” said Tom Grey, field director for StopPredatoryGambling.org. “They should’ve diversified (the economy) instead of chasing their loss.”

But Joe Kelly, chamber president, said 35,000 people work at New Jersey casinos, and thousands more around the state work for outside vendors that depend on casinos for their business.

“It is not just an Atlantic County issue. It is not just a Cape May issue,” Kelly said. “There’s purchasing done by every county.”

LoBiondo is working to repeal the provision with U.S. Rep Shelly Berkley, co-chair of the Congressional Gaming Cascus, and has reached out to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has a history of representing the interests of the gaming industry.

Get Dressed For A Halloween Party

Submitted by: Raymond Plona

When we were kids, we would look forward to that one day in October that seemed magical and we would indulge ourselves in the happiness of decorating, carving jack-o-lanterns, planning our costumes and attending parties. Halloween is the one day of the year when you can be anyone or anything and eat candy until your stomach aches right? So what happens when you become adults? I m sure most of you would probably not eat that much of candy anymore. There are things that not so socially acceptable for adults to do during Halloween anymore. You re forced into the world of adult Halloween: helping kids with costumes, chaperoning their parties, and handing out candy instead of collecting it and plus- you have to fork out money just to give away the candy to other kids.

How do you really enjoy Halloween parties. Date is most important factor. Should it be organized on Halloween night only? The Halloween weekend you organize should be planned accordingly. Make sure that you have sent invitation cards in advance to all of your guests. It becomes mandatory if you wish the attendees should wear costumes of your choice. Most Halloween costume ranges from poodle skirts to embellished marks. In case you have some reservations for dress items you must brief the condition with genuine reason. Urge the couples to wear Halloween couple s costumes instead. In case your participants are single girls and boys Halloween women s costumes and men s costumes would do. Your party becomes more exciting when you set a tradition of special dressing.

It is not difficult to design party invites if you have abundant time. Order them in advance or book online. You can buy invites from stores. Various categories of Halloween party kits are available. Invitations, napkins, plates and decoration must be funny and qualitative. Manage time to prepare them and make ransom-note style invitations. Ask your friends to assist you in cutting different shapes of witches hats or black cats. Write party details on them through white gel pen. It will look unique and will give personal touch. You can purchase a can of granite-look spray paint. Do paint tombstone-shaped cutout and write party details but make sure they dry before use.

Your Halloween celebration is benchmark in 21st century through emailing ideas. Avoid paper invitations and go for e-invitations to go with the ongoing trend. Many websites are available for such e-invites. You don t need investing extra time. Simply pay charge online and your order is completed within few minutes. This promptness saves your time and you get ample opportunity to personalize invitations with many extraordinary features. An opportunity to have feedback of people having read your card and accepted it too is abundant through this initiative. Or else, use Facebook and put programme information on it. Those interested will surely join your team.

Think of best decorative elements and make them personalized. They can be procured from party suppliers for better d cor party. When you make it by your own, it looks better. Whatever setting you have worked upon it ultimately makes or breaks entire mood of your party and impresses accordingly. Creativity and lots of groundwork is required in planning them. Design Halloween shaped personalized placeholders to present some of your special guests on the day of programme. Decoration of graveyard can be designed through tombstones taken out from foams. There is a possibility that you can t procure required properties but of course you have choice to collect men s and women s costumes which help you develop the desired character you were looking for. Frankenstein is a better choice. You can fill such costumes by foam and can add weight in it below fro better stability. Keep it in mind that Halloween should not be celebrated with brightened lights. Keep the atmosphere darkened with cooler lights by replacing normal ones with some coloured light including red or green. Black lights can be better option for that special look. Candles offer excellent Halloween atmosphere but you should be choosy in their selection. Don t use wax candles. Purchase light candles and fix them properly at particular fixtures which are powered through batteries or electricity and are sufficient.

Have you located special property which helps you light up properly like centerpieces or hanging skeleton? Put extra effort by colouring them creatively in special colours. Select character foil balloons with desired images like spiders or ghosts rather than having normal latex balloons. Arrange special food by consulting your caterer in prior and requesting them the exact requirement. Even catering staffs too must dress up in Halloween costumes to match the theme. Ask waitresses to wear sexy women s costumes of a sexy waitress or sexy vampire in party. Likewise waiters too must wear adult men s costumes such as Count Dracula on this occasion.

Maria Contreras-Sweet Group buys The Weinstein Company assets, saves it from bankruptcy

Maria Contreras-Sweet Group buys The Weinstein Company assets, saves it from bankruptcy

Sunday, March 4, 2018

On Thursday in a meeting at New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office, Maria Contreras-Sweet Group, billionaire Ron Burkle, and a number of other investors acquired assets of The Weinstein Company for reportedly about US$500 million. The Weinstein Company had financial difficulties and was nearly bankrupt after Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual misconduct by dozens of women last year, which impacted the business budget.

At least two of The Weinstein Company board of directors — consisting of Tarak Ben Ammar, Lance Maerov and Bob Weinstein — participated in the meeting, according to The New York Times. Maria Contreras-Sweet Group was represented by Maria Contreras-Sweet and Ron Burkle. The New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman was also in the meeting.

Maria Contreras-Sweet Group agreed to pay The Weinstein Company’s debt, sized at US$225 million, reports indicated. The acquisition would save around 150 jobs held at the Weinstein Company. Maria Contreras-Sweet Group announced the deal, also confirmed by The Weinstein Company. The deal was expected to take about 40 days to be completed.

The agreement required Maria Contreras-Sweet Group to protect the jobs of company employees, and establish a victim compensation fund which would compensate victims of Harvey Weinstein’s alleged sexual misconduct while not rewarding the “bad actors”, as Schneiderman put it — people who had contributed to the sexual misconduct. The victim compensation fund would allegedly be around US$90 million, according to reports.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman filed a lawsuit against The Weinstein Company in early February of this year. He reportly indicated he might settle the lawsuit after the deal is finalized.

Maria Contreras-Sweet Group said they would use the assets in creating a new movie studio with a majority-female leadership.

The Weinstein Company said on Monday, three days before the deal announcement, it intended to file for bankruptcy as it could not find a buyer that would keep it afloat until the deal would be finalized.

The Weinstein Company was founded in 2005.

United States Senator Lieberman to speak at Republican party convention

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

United States (U.S.) Senator Joe Lieberman is scheduled to speak at the Republican party convention, according to a member of the McCain campaign who wishes to remain anonymous. Lieberman, who was the Democratic vice presidential candidate in the 2000 presidential election, has been one of Republican party candidate, John McCain’s, staunchest supporters.

The official who informed the press of this announcement stated that Lieberman is slated to speak on the second day, a Monday, of the convention. There has been a lot of speculation in the past months that Lieberman would speak at the convention. In a interview with David Brody of CBN, Lieberman stated in response to the question about the possibility of him being at the convention that, “well, it’s not clear yet but you might just see me there.”

Lieberman is currently in Georgia, with Senator Lindsey Graham; he responded when asked if he would be speaking at the convention that “it’s quite possible, but I’ll let them announce it.” Lieberman’s office has not commented on this announcement.

Lieberman has been recently considered a possible candidate for the Republican vice presidential seat. The convention will be held in St. Paul, Minnesota from September 1 through the 4th. He is currently a Independent Senator in Connecticut, who caucuses with the Democratic party. Lieberman was the Democratic vice presidential candidate back in 2000, when he ran with Al Gore.

Cuba announces shift of farm management to local level

Cuba announces shift of farm management to local level

Thursday, May 1, 2008

In an effort to boost its troubled agricultural sector, Cuba announced a major shift in the management of the country’s farms, which are to be placed under the control of over 150 local delegations rather than the national government. The move was announced in Granma, the official newspaper of the Cuban Communist Party.

On Thursday, Granma reported that the management of the farms has moved from the national government’s Agriculture Ministry to the municipal level. The decision-making will now be handled by 169 new local delegations. The reform also involves the elimination of 104 departments which have been deemed unnecessary.

“The municipal agriculture delegations — an organizational process that has just concluded — will assume the responsibility for the functioning, development and control … of agricultural production,” Granma said. The move is intended to “stimulate agricultural production, perfect its sale and increase the availability of food and, in this way, substitute imports.”

It is fundamental to concentrate efforts on increasing production and productivity, above all of food.

President Raúl Castro, who succeeded his brother Fidel in February, has made agriculture one of the top priorities for Cuba. At a meeting with Communist Party leaders earlier this week, Raúl called food production “a matter of maximum national security.” In past weeks, Raúl has said he wants to promote the decentralizing of food production, which he believes will decrease the country’s dependency on foreign imports.

Officials estimate that government mismanagement has resulted in 51 percent of Cuba’s arable land becoming underused or uncultivated. Also, Cuba imported $1.7 billion worth of food in 2007, a number that is expected to reach over $2 billion this year.

The announcement came as hundreds of thousands took to the streets in Havana for the annual May Day parade. Raúl Castro attended the parade, but did not speak, instead choosing to smile and wave from a podium as marchers streamed past. The event lasted only 2 hours, a large departure from previous years. Before Raúl’s presidency, Fidel Castro’s speeches themselves sometimes lasted close to 2 hours, and the parades often featured singing or skits.

Although Raúl did not speak at the parade, Salvador Valdés Mesa, head of the Cuban Workers Confederation, used his speech as an opportunity to promote economic efficiency and productivity. “It is fundamental to concentrate efforts on increasing production and productivity, above all of food,” he said.

Finger found in frozen custard by North Carolina man

Finger found in frozen custard by North Carolina man

Tuesday, May 3, 2005

In an eerie echo of the Wendy’s chili finger case, a man found a severed finger tip in his frozen custard on Monday in North Carolina, USA. However, unlike the Wendy’s case, agriculture and labor officials have confirmed with Craig Thomas, the owner of Kohl’s Frozen Custard, that an employee had lost the finger tip while working with the custard dispensing machine at the location.

“I thought it was candy because they put candy in your ice cream … to make it a treat,” Clarence Stowers told Wilmington WWAY TV. Stowers continued, “OK, well, I’ll just put it in my mouth and get the ice cream off of it and see what it is.”

The Kohl’s Frozen Custard outlet is located on South College Road in Wilmington, North Carolina.

“We are still trying to ascertain what exactly happened,” owner Thomas told WRAL Raleigh-Durham. “But in the seconds that it took for the accident to happen, and for (the employee) to tell the manager that it happened, a pint was being scooped out,” he said.

“I’m sick at my stomach, I just can’t get that taste out of my mouth,” Stowers told WECT TV6 in Wilmington. Stowers is keeping the finger tip in his freezer and said he plans to hire a lawyer.

This is the second time that an employee has lost a finger tip at Kohl’s Frozen Custard. Former employee William Franklin lost a finger tip last summer, but an investigation by the Department of Labor placed the blame on Franklin for that incident.

Kohl’s Frozen Custard was permitted to re-open after state inspectors monitored the disassembly and sterilization of the custard dispensing machine.

Prohibition Party holds convention; nominates Jack Fellure for U.S. President

Prohibition Party holds convention; nominates Jack Fellure for U.S. President

Thursday, June 23, 2011

Retired West Virginia engineer Lowell Jackson “Jack” Fellure won the presidential nomination of the Prohibition Party yesterday at the party’s National Convention in Cullman, Alabama. He won on the second ballot, defeating Thompson Township tax accessor James Hedges of Pennsylvania, who initially ran unopposed. Party Chairman Toby Davis of Mississippi received the vice presidential nomination.

The Prohibition Party is the third oldest existing political party in the United States, having been established in 1869. It reached its height of popularity during the late 19th century. As its name suggests, the party heavily supported the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which banned the sale of alcohol, and resulted in the US period known as Prohibition (1919–33). The party has declined since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, but has continued to nominate candidates for the presidential election.

Fellure, 79, has run for president in every election since 1988, though usually as a Republican. This run marks his first as a member of the Prohibition Party. On his campaign website, he cites the Authorized 1611 King James Bible as his presidential platform, and calls for the teaching of the Bible in public schools, criminalization of homosexuality, and the elimination of abortion, the liquor industry and pornography. On economics, he supports reducing taxes and balancing the federal budget.

While Jim [Hedges] has contributed valuable resources to this Party…his positions regarding Environmentalism and passivity toward war forced me to vote for Jack Fellure.

Hedges, the first Prohibition Party member elected to public office since 1959, announced his campaign in February 2010, and was the only candidate until last month. According to Vice Chairman June Griffin: “While Jim has contributed valuable resources to this Party…his positions regarding Environmentalism and passivity toward war forced me to vote for Jack Fellure. As well, his insistence on a moratorium on the building of nuclear plants caused much unrest among the membership. Yet he prevailed to install this plank.”

The ten voting Prohibition Party convention delegates and a few guests met for the National Convention, which began on Monday at the Holiday Inn Express in Cullman. Tuesday featured a short greeting from Cullman Mayor Max Townson, followed by addresses from Libertarian consultant Stephen P. Gordon, Ballot Access News publisher Richard Winger, and Eunie Smith of the Eagle Forum.

Gordon, who previously worked as the e-Campaign manager for the 2008 Bob Barr presidential campaign, jokingly commented that his speech “stunk”. He opened his address with the joke that “the way to pick out the libertarian at a Prohibition Party function is that I’m the one wearing the Jerry Garcia tie.” He discussed how third party candidates could utilize new media to their advantage, but avoided any ideological topics.

Winger, an expert on election law, discussed ballot access and the history of the Prohibition Party. He notably explained how the party had cost the Republicans presidential victories in the elections of 1884 and 1916, which forestalled the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment by Republicans, who wanted to do away with the alcohol issue. Gordon later commented that Winger’s speech was well-received by the audience.

After Winger’s speech, the convention broke for lunch. Afterwards, Smith, the widow of former Congressman Albert L. Smith, Jr., focused on immigration and education in her address. When asked about the Eagle Forum’s participation in the fight against alcohol, she commented that the group was focused on more pressing issues such as gambling.

After the nomination, some party members traveled to the grave of Sidney Catts in Florida. Catts, who died in 1936, was the first and only state governor elected from the Prohibition Party.

The party will now begin ballot access drives in Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, New Jersey, Utah, Colorado, Tennessee and Arkansas. In 2008, the late Gene Amondson appeared on the ballot in Colorado, Florida and Louisiana and picked up a total of 653 votes.
