Wikinews on Sunday interviewed Deepa Malik, India’s first female Paralympic medalist, who won the silver medal in the Women’s Shot Put F53 event finals, at the 2016 Summer Paralympics being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Malik lost the gold medal to Bahrain’s Fatema Nedham, who had the best throw 4.76 metres, setting a new regional record in paralympic women’s shot put.
Arriving in Rio, Malik had initial trouble due to the airline losing her luggage; it didn’t all arrive until three days later: clothes, opening ceremony outfit and equipment including competition belts.
In early August there was a possibly that Malik might lose her spot on the Indian team going to Rio, with fellow female para athlete Karam Jyoti challenging Malik’s selection and the Sport’s Authority of Indian’s selection process at the High Court of Delhi. The high court ruled against the plaintiff.
Both of these events occurred against the wider backdrop of the Paralympic Committee of India being suspended by the International Paralympic Committee. The Sports Authority of India took final authority over the Paralympic Committee of India for sending a team to Rio, with agreement from the International Paralympic Committee; this arrangement allowed India to compete under their own flag at the 2016 Summer Paralympics.

Losing someone is no small matter, mainly because so many different aspects are involved at the same time:
– Emotionally, you have to deal with their not being around permanently.
– Physically, you have to adjust to everyday living without them.
– Mentally, you will have to psyche yourself up for doing their share of daily work such as house chores, bills and financial issues while trying to comprehend with matters that they used to deal with.
– Financially, you now have to make ends meet without their help. This is especially so for those who lose their working spouses for women, they may have to start working for extra income while men may have to work a second job.
On top of that, you have specific tasks you alone have to manage such as the funeral and burial rites or cremation, estate execution, division of assets and property as well as future plans for the family, just to name a few. However you look at it, losing someone is definitely no walk in the park.
You will need to do some preparation when someone passes away. These tasks can be divided into:
1. Those that can be done prior to their passing. This is in cases when their death is anticipated, such as after a long illness.
2. Those that have to be done immediate upon their passing. This includes all necessary communication and documentation, and covers all circumstances of death, anticipated or otherwise.
Communication is the first thing you have to prepare. Knowing who to inform first is crucial in ensuring there is no miscommunication or hurt feelings later. Calling a cousin before the spouse, for instance, is normally unacceptable by everyone. This may, of course, be necessary in extenuating circumstances, such as the spouse is not mentally able to handle the news and the cousin is thus listed as the next of kin. To prepare for this, have a list of contact persons in order of importance within reach.
Otherwise, the first persons to be informed should always be the immediate family. This means spouse, parents and siblings, with the spouse right at the top of the list. If that loved one dies in hospital or some other medical institution, this part will be taken care of by their personnel, which is a big help. They will also be able to do the necessary documentation like autopsy request and report, death certificate and discharge of bodily remains and personal effects. If death happens elsewhere, call 911 and get them to initiate the necessary, after which you just need to follow whatever procedures that follow.
One of the most helpful things you can request from hospital staff is a list of funeral homes or crematoriums, as this will save you the time on having to look for one yourself. With so many things to do, it will be a good idea to get as much help as possible; in other words, if someone offers to do some communication, let them.
One of the things that most families disagree on is cremation. It is always good to find out beforehand, even for yourself, which type is preferred. Nowadays, many opt for cremation as more and more gravesites are being recycled with bodies exhumed for cremation every 50 years or so.
Another thing you must remember is to call your loved one s employer. This is when you need to find out the necessary paperwork that may be involved as well as the possible benefits family members might be entitled to. These include last paychecks, paid vacation time and unpaid expense claims. This is also the right time to find out about any life insurance policy your loved one has, who the beneficiaries are and proceed with the necessary steps for claims. This may be very overwhelming for you so getting some help from other family members or a lawyer friend will be a huge help.
Having a will helps a lot in distributing the estate as your loved one would wish it so. Getting this done, however, can be tedious so it is best you get a lawyer to do it instead of attempting it on your own, simply because you have tons of other things to do as well. Sometimes, it is good to involve those close to the deceased in these matters as it can help to ease their grief while you manage your own.

Armed police and officials entered the Central Kalahari Game Reserve on September 12, giving the Bushmen there ten days to leave. Some Bushmen are reported to have fled into the Reserve and are evading capture.
In 1996 the central government of Botswana adopted a policy of evicting the Bushmen from the Central Game Reserve, an area originally set aside for them to inhabit. A constitutional amendment is also pending in Parliament to revoke the right of Bushmen to live in the Reserve in perpetuity. The government has expressed concern with several issues surrounding their continued presence in the reserve, including the need to supply them with water, the expense of educating them and providing them with health care, and their effect on the animals in the Reserve. They also say that it is in the Bushmen’s best interest to join civilized society.
Critics of the relocation, including the groups Survival International and Botswanian Centre for Human Rights, allege very different motivations. Some believe that the government is moving the Bushmen out of the region to encourage tourism and diamond mining. Others argue that the government is acting out of compassion, but is making the wrong choice; they say that the Bushmen should be left to their hunter-gatherer ways, and that attempting to integrate them into modern Botswania will destroy their identity. They also state that the resettlement camps they are placed in are in bad condition, with rampant alcoholism and prostitution.
A court case has been in progress for three years against the government for moving them out of the Reserve, and is currently being heard. In August 2005 the United Nations urged Botswana to work with the Bushman to settle the dispute. It is estimated that some 250 Bushmen remain in the Reserve, having evaded eviction or infiltrated back after having been removed.
At press time, there were six days left on the government’s ultimatum.

Former South Korean President Choi Kyu-hah died in Seoul on October 22, 2006. He was 87 years old.
Choi was found unconscious in his home by a nurse at 6 a.m. local time (UTC+9) on Sunday morning and was rushed to Seoul National University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 7:37 a.m. Doctors said that he died from acute heart failure.
Choi became acting President after then-President Park Chung Hee was assassinated on October 26, 1979. He was officially sworn as the 10th President in December of the same year following a military coup, but resigned that post on August 16, 1980. After his resignation, he refused to discuss the coup in much detail.
Born in Wonju, Gangwon Province, on July 16, 1919, Choi was a graduate in English language and literature from Tokyo Teachers College and worked as a professor at the Teachers College of Seoul National University for a short time after the end of Japanese rule in Korea in 1945. He entered politics in 1946 and served as foreign minister from 1967 to 1975 and prime minister from 1975 to 1979.
Choi was buried in Daejeon National Cemetery after a state funeral. His wife, Hong Gi, died in 2004 but her remains were exhumed from the current burial site in Wonju and buried next to those of her husband.

1. Question: Will the steep cost of variable annuity insurance fees cut into my returns?
Fact: There are low-cost annuities designed to charge minimal insurance fees and preserve the value of tax-deferral.
Most variable annuities charge asset based insurance fees such as a mortality and expense (M&E) fee. The average insurance fees for a typical VA are 1.33 percent of assets annually, according to Morningstar data as of December 31, 2008. Critics are quick to point out that such fees can erode the growth of your portfolio over the long term, and these fees can reach thousands or tens of thousands of dollars each year in the case of affluent investors with substantial balances.
The good news is that there are now low cost variable annuities that charge far less, and products are constantly evolving to provide you with better value.
2. Question: I understand annuities sometimes can pay the sales person high commissions.
Fact: There are new variable annuities that do not pay a commission of any kind.
Most variable annuities pay the salesperson a commission, generally in the five- to seven-percent range. The commissioned salesperson is working for the company that pays them to sell the variable annuitywhich may result in a conflict of interest.
As Wall Street Journal columnist Jonathan Clements wrote, Variable annuities are a favorite with unscrupulous investment advisers, who can collect ridiculously high commissions by foisting these turkeys onto unsuspecting investors. 1
New no-commission variable annuities are designed with two important goals. First, no-commission VAs help keep costs low, so they can provide you with cost-effective tax-deferred accumulation. Second, no-commission VAs are perfectly aligned with the mission of fee-only advisors, who do not accept commissions from any of the products that they recommend, allowing them to uphold their fiduciary obligation to you and provide you with the most objective financial advice.
3. Question: Is it true that some death benefits riders can drain variable annuity returns?
Fact: There are simple variable annuities that offer a basic death benefit at no extra charge.
A basic death benefit can guarantee that your beneficiaries will receive the current contract value, typically without the delays of probate.
Enhanced death benefits, which are generally designed to hedge against market downturns or rising inflation, can cost you an additional 50 basis points per year or more. While some investors may believe an enhanced death benefit is worth the extra cost, these insurance fees can cut into your returns.
If your objective is efficient wealth transfer, you may want to look at other possibilities. For example, if you are insurable, a term-life contract may be a more cost-efficient alternative. Unlike variable annuity assets, life insurance is not subject to ordinary income taxes when passed on to beneficiaries.

A 5.8 earthquake struck 4 miles southwest of Mineral, Virginia, 80 miles south of Washington D.C., at 1:51 p.m. EDT (17:51 UTC) and lasted for 15–30 seconds. The quake had a magnitude of 5.8 with an epicenter 27 miles (43 km) east of Charlottesville, Virginia. A 2.8 aftershock was reported at 2:46 pm EDT (18:46 UTC).
According to Twitter reports, the quake was felt inland as far as Cleveland and Toronto and along the coast from Boston to Georgia. Police sergeant James Ryan, from South Brunswick, New Jersey stated that “The 911 line is flooding with calls right now. People want to know what happened. They want to know if there was an explosion.”
The United States Capitol and The Pentagon in Arlington were evacuated, as were police headquarters and city hall in New York City. Numerous minor injuries have been reported in Washington, D.C.; however, none of them are serious. There have been confirmed reports of damage at the Washington National Cathedral and the Smithsonian Castle. The Pentagon was also damaged when a burst pipe caused flooding. The North Anna Power Station lost offsite power and had to shut down, turning to four diesel generators to maintain cooling of the facility. Both the JFK and Newark airports were briefly shut down and the control towers were evacuated. A release from Amtrak stated that trains will be operating at reduced speed, but no damage has been found on any rail lines. The Washington Metro is also operating on reduced speed, with some stations closed down, while lines are evaluated.
In Boston, it was reported that the building at 111 Devonshire Street appeared to be leaning onto the adjacent building at 50 Milk Street, with fears that it could collapse. The street was blocked off while the Boston Fire Department investigated. However, it was determined that the buildings had always appeared like that. Nevertheless, the Boston Fire Department investigated the roof and the inside of 111 Devonshire St. After 30 minutes, the building was determined to be safe.
This is the second strongest earthquake to originate in Virginia since records have been kept, after the one recorded on May 31, 1897, near Giles County, which was estimated at a magnitude of 5.9.
The Dow initially dropped 50 points after the earthquake struck, but later increased over 100 points.

U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate John Wolfe, Jr. of Tennessee took some time to answer a few questions from Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.
Wolfe, an attorney based out of Chattanooga, announced his intentions last year to challenge President Barack Obama in the Democratic Party presidential primaries. So far, he has appeared on the primary ballots in New Hampshire, Missouri, and Louisiana. In Louisiana, he had his strongest showing, winning 12 percent overall with over 15 percent in some congressional districts, qualifying him for Democratic National Convention delegates. However, because certain paperwork had not been filed, the party stripped Wolfe of the delegates. Wolfe says he will sue the party to receive them.
Wolfe will compete for additional delegates at the May 22 Arkansas primary and the May 29 Texas primary. He is the only challenger to Obama in Arkansas, where a May 10 Hendrix College poll of Democrats shows him with 38 percent support, just short of the 45 percent for Obama. Such an outing would top the margin of Texas prison inmate Keith Russell Judd, who finished 18 percent behind Obama with 41 percent in the West Virginia Democratic primary; the strongest showing yet against the incumbent president. Despite these prospects, the Democratic Party of Arkansas has already announced that if Wolfe wins any delegates in their primary, again, due to paperwork, the delegates will not be awarded. Wolfe will appear on the Texas ballot alongside Obama, activist Bob Ely, and historian Darcy Richardson, who ended his campaign last month.
Wolfe has previously run for U.S. Congress as the Democratic Party’s nominee. On his campaign website, he cites the influence “of the Pentagon, Wall Street, and corporations” on the Obama administration as a reason for his challenge, believing these negatively affect “loyal Americans, taxpayers and small businesses.” Wolfe calls for the usage of anti-trust laws to break up large banks, higher taxes on Wall Street, the creation of an “alternative federal reserve” to assist community banks, and the implementation of a single-payer health care system.
With Wikinews, Wolfe discusses his campaign, the presidency of Barack Obama, corporations, energy, the federal budget, immigration, and the nuclear situation in Iran among other issues.

Ford Motor Company, the U.S. car maker, will reportedly pay €57 million (US$78 million) for a 72.4 percent stake in the Romanian assembly plant Automobile Craiova, a Romanian official said Friday.
“The offer of Ford Motor Company for a 72.4 percent stake is €4.1556 per share or €57 million overall,” said Sebastian Vladescu, head of the State Property Agency (AVAS), after opening Ford’s improved offer. Vladescu added that the contract may be signed on September 12, during the auto show in Frankfurt.
The Romanian government bought back the Craiova-based car maker from Daewoo Motors, in late 2006 for US$51 million. As the Korean company was bankrupt, the government had to pay another $10 million for debts stemming from past loans. Ford is the only bidder for the purchase of the factory.
According to Washington Post, many auto-part makers have set up in the new European Union member country, attracted by cheap labor, favourable tax rates and the rising output of Renault’s Dacia plant. The vice president of Dacia, Constantin Stroe, said that the price Ford offers is not important. “It’s important to have the factory working as soon as possible”, he added. “With this production facility, Romania will become an important auto production center in Europe”, concluded Stroe, cited by HotNews.
