ACLU, Minutemen trade accusations of misbehavior

ACLU, Minutemen trade accusations of misbehavior

Sunday, April 17, 2005

Grey Deacon, a spokesman of the Minuteman Project, told the “Worldnet RadioActive” show in an exclusive interview on April 14 that representatives from the American Civil Liberties Union are now criminally involved in helping illegal entrants cross the US border and avoid detection. He alleges that the ACLU activists are making noise and flashing lights to alert potential illegals to move on to a non-patrolled area of the border.

“The ACLU’s position is that illegal aliens have a right to enter our border and stay in this country as long as they want,” said Deacon. “That’s what one of the leaders of the group told me personally.”

These allegations exist despite the ACLU’s officially stated position of not directly interfering with the Minutemen’s activities. The ACLU’s press release of March 30 affirmed that the participation of ACLU members would be strictly limited to being “neutral observers” and “recorders”, not “participants”, according to ACLU of Arizona Board President Stan Furman, a former Arizona State Senator.

“We recognize the right of a country to defend its borders,” said Eleanor Eisenberg, Executive Director of the ACLU of Arizona, “but it must be done by the proper authorities and in a humane way,” suggesting that the primary concern on the ACLU in interacting with the Minuteman Project was to prevent violence.

The ACLU also quotes prior allegations against the group that sponsors the Minutemen, writing that they are “alleged to have engaged in activities that go beyond First Amendment-protected activity and that is intended to intimidate, harass or otherwise interfere with the rights of others.”

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton regained the IBF light welterweight title belt he relinquished less than 12 months ago when he defeated Juan Urango in Las Vegas, Nevada tonight.

“The Hitman” won by unanimous decision, as the fight went to 12 rounds. Despite early match odds suggesting Hatton would dominate the fight, this was not the case. Each round was close, but most pundits and judges alike agreed that Urango only won 1 of the 12 rounds, with Hatton taking the other 11.

Despite the unfamiliar confines of Las Vegas, Hatton looked touched by the ringing of football fan-like chants, familiar in British boxing, that rang around the arena, as more than half of it was filled by traveling support from across the atlantic.

Many in the UK will hope Hatton has ended the “curse” that has seen names such as Frank Bruno, Naseem Hamed, Barry McGuigan and others fall short while headlining fights on “The Strip”.

From here, it is widely believed “The Hitman” will move on to fight Jose Luis Castillo in June, again likely in Vegas.

How To Maintain Your Beauty

How To Maintain Your Beauty

by

Cherie Chow

There is a saying that beauty is only skin deep and although that may be the case, that does not necessarily mean that we are interested in leaving ourselves go. As a matter of fact, taking care of ourselves and looking our best is a priority for many individuals. The unfortunate reality is, many of us are fighting an uphill battle because we are fighting against time and we may also be fighting against our own schedules, as many of us tend to be busy individuals. What are some things that you can do in order to keep yourself looking as good as possible without spending all of your time doing so?

One important thing that you can do is to be very cautious about anything that you put into your body. I\’m not only talking about the foods that you eat, I\’m talking about the water that you drink. The aging process is not only one that occurs naturally, it also occurs because of the unhealthy lifestyle that many of us live. If you are eating unhealthy foods and drinking unhealthy water, it is going to show in the way that you look. By including more raw fruits and vegetables in your diet and avoiding sugary or fatty foods, you will be able to notice a difference. Keeping yourself hydrated will also make a big difference in the way that you look on the outside.

Some of us have also begun to regret some of the choices that we made when we were younger in life. These can also alter the way that we look, such as piercings and tattoos. Although piercings are a relatively simple thing to correct, tattoos are going to need to be handled through a very specific type of technique. If you are going to have tattoos removed, make sure you choose the best laser tattoo removal system that is available. That will allow you to help remove it without causing further damage.

If weight is a problem for you, there are some things that can be done which will make a difference in the way that you look quickly. Although it is always a good idea for you to get some exercise and eat the right types of foods, you may also want to consider using a dermatologist for a treatment which will help to get rid of some of your body fat. Liposonix is one of the types of treatments that are available, although your physician may have other suggestions which will assist you in the way that you look.

Finally, make sure that you are getting some exercise. Exercise is not a luxury item, it is a necessity that will help you to feel better on the inside and to look better on the outside. The type of exercise that you do is going to depend upon your own personal needs and your schedule but it is important to fit it into your schedule at least a few times every week. You would be surprised with how quickly it will make a difference in the way that you look.

U.S. Senate passes amendment stripping Guantanamo detainees’ access to courts

">
U.S. Senate passes amendment stripping Guantanamo detainees’ access to courts

Friday, November 11, 2005

The U.S. Senate has adopted an amendment, proposed by Senator Lindsey Graham (RSC), to a defense bill limiting detainees’ court privileges.

The amendment would make the Combat Status Review Tribunal (CSRT) statutory law, the Annual Review Board (ARB) statutory law, require the designated civilian officer to be a government official who is appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate, not allow the preponderance of evidence against a detainee be derived from undue coercion, and remove Guantanamo prisoners’ right to file habeas corpus petitions in federal courts.

In regards to the habeas corpus provision, the amendment specifically states, “No court, justice, or judge shall have jurisdiction to hear or consider an application for a writ of habeas corpus filed by or on behalf of an alien outside the United States (as that term is defined in section 101(a)(38) of the Immigration and Naturalization Act (8 U.S.C. 1101(a)(38)) who is detained by the Department of Defense at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.” [1]

The amendment passed with a 49-42 vote. Five Democrats jumped party lines to vote for and four Republicans jumped party lines to vote against the amendment. Nine Senators, seven Republicans and two Democrats, did not vote on the amendment. Kent Conrad, Mary Landrieu, Joseph Lieberman, Ben Nelson, and Ron Wyden were the Democrats who voted for the amendment. Arlen Specter, Lincoln Chafee, Gordon Smith, and John Sununu were the Republicans who voted against the measure.

Senator Graham is quoted as saying, “The president has established procedures to determine who is an enemy combatant and to annually review their status. It’s now time for Congress to sign-off on these procedures and turn them into a statute, a move the courts will give great deference to.”

It should be noted that under Graham’s amendment, detainees would be able to challenge only the narrow question of whether the procedures established by the Secretary of Defense at the time the military determined their status as an enemy combatant were followed. The Court of Appeals for the DC circuit would still retain the ability to rule on that question.

Civil liberties groups as well as human rights groups issued statements opposing the amendment. “The Graham amendment will create a thousand points of darkness across the globe where the United States will be free to hold people indefinitely without a hearing and beyond the reach of U.S. law and the checks and balances of the courts enshrined in our Constitution,” the Center for Constitutional Rights said in a statement.

“The Graham amendment would strip all courts, including the Supreme Court, of jurisdiction to consider habeas corpus petitions or any other action challenging any aspect of the detention of foreign detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, except for the narrow question of whether status review boards follow their own rules,” said a press release from the American Civil Liberties Union.

How To Prevent Blisters Wearing Golf Shoes}

Submitted by: Sean Mennell

There are plenty of golfers that enjoy walking the golf course. It is a relaxing way to spend the day and it is a good form of exercise. Some golfers believe walking improves their scores.

Unfortunately walking 4 to 5 miles around the course can give you blisters, but this can be easily prevented by choosing the right golf shoes and taking a closer look at the materials that are designed to look after your feet. The good thing is most of the materials come with your shoes as standard.

The primary cause of blisters is friction, sweaty feet and excess heat. Friction can be prevented by choosing shoes that are roomy and give you a snug fit so they feel comfortable. You don’t want shoes that are to snug, you want to prevent rubbing. Your golf shoes should have sufficient room for your toes. Make sure there is half an inch or so between your longest toe tips and the end of the shoe.

Let’s take a closer look at a couple of the features inside that will help prevent blisters.

Moisture wicking

Your feet can create moisture inside your shoes especially when you have been walking a lot. But thanks to moisture wicking your feet can stay dry all day long. There is a special material lining inside, that draws the dampness away. Now we don’t know how it does this, but trust us it works superbly well.

Sock liners

We recommend you invest in a pair of sock liners, they are made from a moisture wicking fabric that draws dampness away. Much better than absorbent cotton. Most golf shoes should come with these, but incase they don’t invest in a pair, you can buy them online or in your local store.

Another thing to look out for other than blisters is something called plantar fasciitis.

This occurs when the plantar fascia (PF) becomes inflamed. This runs the length of the bottom of the foot causing pain in the heel. I can be difficult to overcome considering how much most people are on their feet.

Golfers that are on their feet and walk a lot are exposed to PF. This can be easily prevented. Test your shoes for plenty of cushioning in the heel, arch and ball of the foot. Once tested and you have plenty of supportive cushioning you will find this will keep the weight evenly distributed and it will relieve stress on the plantar fascia.

Your golf shoes should be light and flexible at the midsole so that the foot rolls naturally rather than slapping the ground. Another good way to prevent PF is the stretch your feet for 5 minutes on the day you want to tee off.

Remember, your golf shoes are there to support your feet and give you more comfort when walking those 18 holes. Go to your local golf store or browse online. Either way you will find a pair that will prevent your feet from getting blisters in the future.

Andrea Muizelaar on fashion, anorexia, and life after ‘Top Model’

Monday, November 26, 2007

In the 18 months since Andrea Muizelaar was crowned winner of the reality TV series Canada’s Next Top Model, her life has been a complete whirlwind. From working in a dollar store in her hometown of Whitby, Ontario, to modeling haute couture in Toronto, she had reached her dream of becoming a true Top Model.

But at what cost? Unknown to casual television viewers, Muizelaar had been enveloped in the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, which inevitably became too much for her to bear. She gave up modeling and moved back to Whitby, where she sought treatment for her disorder, re-entered college, and now works at a bank. Where is she now? Happy and healthy, she says.

Recently Andrea Muizelaar sat down with Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman in a candid interview that stretched to nearly two hours, as she told all about her hopes and aspirations, her battle with anorexia, and just what really happened on Canada’s Next Top Model.

Canadian media company Bell Globemedia to acquire rival CHUM

">
Canadian media company Bell Globemedia to acquire rival CHUM

Wednesday, July 12, 2006

Canadian media company CHUM Limited has announced that it has agreed to be acquired by larger rival Bell Globemedia Inc. for $1.7 billion CAD cash, bringing the CTV and Citytv broadcast-television networks and such specialty channels as MuchMusic, TSN and Bravo! under the same corporate umbrella.

Shareholders will receive $52.50 per common share of CHUM and $47.25 per Class B (non-voting) share. The estate of the late Allan Waters, who died late last year, has agreed to tender all its shares to the bid, netting the Waters family nearly $450 million.

In a joint statement, CHUM’s chairman, Jim Waters, said, “In Bell Globemedia’s offer, we not only found value for shareholders, but confidence that we would be placing CHUM in the hands of an owner with the financial resources and track record to continue to grow and build on our collective legacy.”

Globemedia CEO Ivan Fecan added, “We are able to make this premium offer because Bell Globemedia is clearly the most logical buyer of CHUM. There is a unique strategic fit to our operations that can make the united company a stronger national champion in broadcasting. We intend to maintain and build the valuable CHUM brands and develop more opportunities for Canadian programming.” He added that CTV and Citytv will remain separate networks and “will maintain separate and independent news divisions in order to ensure a continued diversity and competition in news coverage.”

In a separate release, CHUM announced it would be cutting 281 jobs at its stations across the country, particularly at its Citytv stations in western Canada. Effectively immediately, evening newscasts at CKVU-TV Vancouver, CKEM-TV Edmonton, CKAL-TV Calgary and CHMI-TV in the Winnipeg market are being eliminated, with plans for a new newsmagazine tentatively titled In Your City at the three Prairie stations, and more resources being put into each station’s local version of Breakfast Television. Less drastic changes are planned for its A-Channel stations in smaller markets. The company said these changes will result “in a significant reduction in staffing and operating costs.”

The companies said that they expect to sell CHUM’s A-Channel stations, as well as Alberta educational broadcaster Access, to third parties, despite CTV’s historical ties to several of them. Many of the A-Channel stations were originally acquired by CHUM from Baton Broadcasting, the predecessor of Bell Globemedia, in 1997, as part of a trade that sent CHUM’s ATV and ASN assets in Atlantic Canada to Baton and allowed Baton to acquire the CTV network itself.

Despite CHUM’s ownership of MuchMusic and CTV’s recent launch of MTV Canada, the companies claim their specialty channels are “complementary” and did not indicate any sale plans.

Bell Globemedia is currently majority-owned by BCE Inc. but is awaiting regulatory approval for a restructuring involving the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, Torstar Corp., and the Thomson family. In the interim, the takeover offer will be made by a new company owned by the proposed new shareholder structure.
